Aftermarket Manual Shifters

I'm looking at aftermarket manual shifters for my phoon.

People have often said the Rip Shifter is the best, others have said the Mal Wood unit is great, and others again have said that Herrods isn't as good as the Rip Shift for example.

I don't fancy buying one of each to see which I like, so does anyone have any experience? I don't personally know anyone with an aftermarket manual shifter, so a "hands-on" comparo isn't an option.

It's not a matter of cost, Herrods 'Sureshift' costs $500, the Rip Shift can be had for ~$475, and Mal Wood can do their shifter for ~$310 non-exchange.

Rip shift advertise infallible 2-3 shift as a strong point, but I'm really just interested in better shifting.

Is a 'flick on the wrist' gear change a possibility with any of these options, because that's what I'm really after. The standard unit does the job, but can be a bit tractor like on the 3-2 change sometimes.

galconn - how easily does the Rip Shift, erm, shift? I read over on AFF someone claiming an almost 'flick-of-the-wrist' ease of use. Is it that good?

On a foon I wouldn't bother.

Just learn to dab the clutch and get confidence in shifting quicker. 40/50mm travel is all the clutch needs.

I still haven't found someone with a ripper that can change quicker than me in a stocker.

Umm but Ben some people actually LIKE there gearboxes..... :spoton:

F6 Ute, I'd never challenge your shifting skillz in a million years :spoton:

What I'm really on about, is that I'd just like to reduce the effort required when changing the gears.

In other words, it's not so much the speed of shift that I'm looking at, but the ease of shifting ie 'slotting' into the next gear instead of 'forcing' it.

I'm not in a rush though, and given I'll be keeping the car for a while, I may take my time in checking these things out.

I'm pretty adept at matching revs too to optimise shifting, though a speedy 3-2 shift can still be tricky to pull off well.

To further clarify, going for a balls out dash isn't the reason I want to improve the manual shifting. I'm pretty nifty with speedy upshifts, and matching revs on the downshift.

I suppose what I'm after is the holy grail of manual shifting for the T56. I can slap the stock unit around pretty good, but what I'm after is the ducks guts, the bees knees, the dogs bollocks of fine aftermarket shifters.

I'd just like to work out which is the best unit available, that'll enable me to slot into each and every gear up or down, (revs and synchros permiting) without having to 'work it' into the slot.
