Valve Springs

Hi Guys,

Im a new member to the site, and have recently purchased my 04 BA XR6T, After parting with my much loved skyline GTR due to being very unpractial for everyday driving.

I am immediatly looking at modifying my new ride and looking to produce 330KW @ wheels

I am aware of what mods need to take place to acheive this kind of power although my main concern is the replacing of Valve Springs as it was something I never had to do with my previous car.

I have tried to find old posts with instructions on how to install Valve Springs, but have been unsuccessful.

Can anyone help me in providing instructions on how to? and whats involved in changing the valve springs?

Eg

Do the cams need to come out?

Are there any special tools required?

Etc

Any help would be much appreciated

welcome to the site mate!!!

the valve spring install is a biatch!!!!!!!!!! I would not do it myself... better of paying someone for that job :blink: everything else is not too bad (injectors, intercooler, 2nd cai etc) and can be done in no time. Valve springs would be the only job I would defiantely leave for some1 else!!

Yeah there are guys on here that have done it heaps of times and it's still a 4 hour minimum job from what I've heard!

You also need a special tool that hooks under the camshaft and winds down to compress each spring enough to get the collets off...

This is just what I've read so feel free to correct me guys. Goldie, xlr8ed or m6 xr6t would be the ones to ask...

Thanks for the reply guys,

I have worked on many late and old model engines in my time. I also have friends who are qualified mechanics who can help me if I get stuck.

Just want to get an idea in whats involved before I start.

Performance workshops in sydney are charging in excess of $1000 for this job, I personaly dont see how 4 hours work is worth that kind of money especially when you can get a set of cobra springs from nizpro for $286

Any one else have any advise on whats involved in the replacement of valve springs, preferably someone who has done it before.

Or someone who can lead me to an old post, possibly with instructions and pictures of the process.

I was even quoted $1500 :crybaby:

that's Sydney for ya. Isn't it enough that we have to pay 1/2 million for a crappy old house.

Most shops charge around the 800 mark with nizpro springs.

You need 2 special tools, Cam holder and spring tool. together they would be worth around 800.

You have to get the engine to TDC with both cams bing in the correct position, then with the cam tool lock them into place, Lock the cam tensioner back in place so it doesnt rachet out, Then undo the cam phasers and in the correct order undo the cam caps. Remove cams, start changing springs. You need compressed air into the cylinder to hold the vavles up. You also need to make sure the crank doesnt turn when you place air in the cylinder. If I was you I would get someone whos done them before, if they are quoting that much try and offer cash and bring them down.

ohh also before reinstalling cams remove the lifters and bleed them back keeping them in there correct position you removed them from. :laughing: hope that helps.
