Reading the sunday mail today they predict that prices could hit $3 a litre as early as next year. This would mean that we would be nearly paying $190 to fill up our tank and even more for the guys with the utes.

What are the factors that they quote to come to this prediction?

Oil would have to hit US$200+ a barrel for this happen... though oil is 'surging' at the minute as it did in the middle of last year on the open market it is still only US$67-68 a barrel... The stock market tend to get a bit excited, up the price, it's too high and then it settles... the beauty of supply and demand!

Maybe just a bit of scare mongering...

Jack

Can't quite remember what they said the factors were don't have the paper anymore. But John Howard doesn't seem to care how high the petrol prices go because he just profits with the extra money he gets from the taxes.

Yes and no... the GST that is collected on fuel is returned back to the states and the fuel excise that equates to about 1/3 of our petrol price in no longer indexed against inflation (meaning it doesn't go up automatically) which is good... that happened a couple of years ago... the problem with higher petrol prices is that it has a huge effect on every household budget, regardless of whether you are single/married/kids or whatever... the money for fuel has to come from somewhere and it usually means it has to come from other areas of the houehold...

WTF are we paying GST on fuel? There's already taxes on it.

Forget income tax cuts. Cut the taxes on fuel. Any party that promises this would win an election by a landslide.

Farkin pollies, they wouldn't know how to fill up a fuel tank or pay for it for that matter.
