killer Member 46 Member For: 21y 4m 18d Location: sydney Posted 07/04/06 02:46 PM Share Posted 07/04/06 02:46 PM I have a phase 3 ba xr6t which has just been blueprinted and fitted withinternals to handle 1000 horsepower. I have been running only 310 rwkw beforethis latest work with a modified auto gearbox which they say is good for 320rwkwbut realisticaly for how long???Would anybody have any idea as to the cost involved in upgrading my auto tohandle 400rkrw so as I can dial up my tune to about 360 to 370 rwkw and havea gearbox that's "almost bullet proof."Also what internals would they change to cope with this extra kw.My auto has had line pressure increase and valve body changes plus a few otherminor modifications. Any help would be greatly appreciatedKILLER Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/24598-auto-upgrade/ Share on other sites

I know of a few options, you will need to have the auto fully rebuilt with kevlar bands/ clutch packs installed as a minimum. Along with the valve body modded, not knowing how modded yours is may need further moding. The main week link in the auto at 400rwk power level seemes to be the planaterys breaking. I think GEEEA has done a lot of work with Kewish- in dandenong, regarding the upgraded planetarys. in saying that I had my auto rebuilt by Tony at Yarra Vally automatics great guy, also talk to preston automatics they do a good job 2 I here anyway good luck! They're advertised at the back of the April '06 Street Machine.www.torque-power.com.au if you're interested - dont think they have the Ford 6 bellhousing on the site yet by the looks. The standard 4 speed will not cope with that amount of power on a daily basis even if you do have it rebuilt, they are just not strong enough.Geea and I have been running about 330rwkw+ with our autos for quite some time. Craig has his work done at Kewish and I have my work done at Preston Automatics both companies have spent a lot of time and money on research. After 2 years of ongoing R&D we still have not got it soughted. We are to the point that it all holds together for a lot longer than it used to and that is a result of trial and error with different internals but niether of us is at a point where we could say ok this is it I wont need another rebuild or have a component fail for the next 12 months. They are getting better but 400rwkw will be too much to ask in my opinion and a C9 conversion may well be the only reliable result. If you do stick with the standard auto you would need to budget for a $1500-2500 a year rebuild at least. Good luck with it. Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/24598-auto-upgrade/#findComment-368701 Share on other sites

And some really good tyres! Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/24598-auto-upgrade/#findComment-368708 Share on other sites

Posted 09/04/06 01:21 AM Share Posted 09/04/06 01:21 AM Dean is right the 4spd auto isn't able to cope with 400rwkw's. However this being said unless you've modified your turbo and have the best tuner around you won't be getting close to 400rwkw's in a auto anyway. My car runs 332rwkw's on the street and my auto can cope with this on normal tyres. Since I've fitted the Michellin PS2's the auto is struggling a little. If you intend racing it you'll have even more trouble. Dave from Kewish has been developing the BA 4spd for over 2 1/2 years now with me as his main crash test dummy. I believe he has a better over all solution than most. As Dean said Preston has been working with him for a similar period of time. MY box is getting better all the time. As my power increases and also my tyres get better tha box has been continually developed to deal with it. Each time I break something Dave finds a sloution to that problem and then waits for me to break the next thing. After the drags last night I think I may have toasted a band. I'll be talking to Dave tomorrow and he'll have a look and find a solution. I'd say that at the moment Dave would be able to provide a box that would hold 350rwkw's for a period of time. I'd think that any auto running that sort of power would need to be serviced every 12 months at a minimm.Geea. (maybe I should rephrase that) Luckily for me this car is not mydaily drive, so hopefully I may get a reasonably decent life from the auto ormaybe I'm dreaming. I'm glad to see you guys and the auto shops are doing the R & D because when it comes to gearboxs you could fit the sum of all my knowledge in that area onthe top of a pinhead. Also any idea on cost for 350rwkw auto upgrade?KILLER Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/24598-auto-upgrade/#findComment-368809 Share on other sites

It changes gears lightning quick but still runs factory pressure which does contribute to a longer life.360rwkws is at the limit of a modded 4speed auto.the cost is about $2500+$500 if you want a hi-stall conv Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/24598-auto-upgrade/#findComment-369246 Share on other sites
