Abuse Mode

Is abuse mode and traction control one of the same thing ?

have noticed after the edit that if traction control is not turned off while giving the car "some abuse" the traction control light will stay on untill the car is restarted ?

I've got a story, but not sure what's it's worth... When I picked up my BF phoon in Adelaide last year, I had planned a careful run in procedure, to bed the rings in. Lowish revs, loading up the engine as much as possible without it labouring etc etc blah blah

As soon as I got off down the road, all that was thrown out the window. I didn't abuse it, but lets just say that you would have had to have a rocket up your arse to catch me. I put on a couple hundred k's before I came back.

My point, is that it went like the proverbial bat out of hell. I'd launch slowly, then plant the foot moments after I'd moved off (clutch fully out). The thing would break traction when it hit boost, and chirp into 2nd every single time. Just seemed so bloody fast.

Soon after, I made the journey through Melbourne (over Chrissy visiting the olds), on my way to Canberra where I am now. Whilst in Melbourne, I took the car out one day, and..... well it didn't seem as balls-out fast as it used to. At that point, I'd only done 2000kms.

In the end I just put it down to my having gotten used to the power. After reading that article in Motor mag though, I'm not so sure. The car overboosted (or fuel surged) in Melbourne at one point too (no idea if that makes any difference).

Anyway, I'll be getting Edit soon, so we'll soon see. Seems a tad lazy in 1st and 2nd, but again, could be that I've just gotten used to it.

Is abuse mode "learned"? Has my car identified me as a nutter, and therefore goes easy on the boost occassionally?

Traction control and abuse mode are completely different. Abuse mode is engine specific where as TC is driveline psecific. Obviously TC is depandant on engine but it's all related in the long run.

The abuse mode learns our driving technique so if your a speed demon then that's typically how your car will behave where as if you live life like a simple cruiser then your car will be more of a lemon.

So if your changing driving styles frequently, I'm more curious to know abuse mode is effected here. Some days I'm a lead foot and other days I drive like my gran!

Took the car for a long spirited drive today. Gave it a heaps, and the F6 lapped it all up. The only thing I can ever notice the car doing on the sly is when the TC comes on. Well, even that's not really on the sly.

In short, I have no idea what abuse mode coming on would feel like in my car. Meh.

The abuse mode can't learn your driving style, it can only react and reduce torque after it has sensed a number of various things which it then decides puts the driveline in danger and reduces torque to help it survive. Things such as rpm, stall speed, throttle position etc are examples of inputs. If anyone has tried to stall up an auto BA XR8 will know exactly what torque management is. Even with a 2500rpm stall it won't even spin the tyres once you get off the brakes and it feels hell slow until the abuse mode stops and then it goes like 5.4 litres should.

Whilst your mainly still going by the seat of your pants feel, try this as a little experiment

During a very hot day take your car to a bit of road (giving it hell all the way there) and then try to do a quick launch, it will accelerate quickly in comparison to other cars but you won't get the launching feeling...

That night (when it has cooled down considerably) take your car (baby it all the way) to the same bit of road and then try to do a quick launch, you'll certainly notice a big improvement... (I know I did)

I found that the really hot days we had over summer really took it’s toll on the overall ability of the car, the other thing I noticed was that the abuse mode starts to kick in once the temp has gone a little over 3/8’s of the way up on the temp gauge (on a hot summers day my car sits just under the 1/2 way mark, whist on a really cold day \ night time it will sit just above the 1/4 way mark)
