I've got a story, but not sure what's it's worth... When I picked up my BF phoon in Adelaide last year, I had planned a careful run in procedure, to bed the rings in. Lowish revs, loading up the engine as much as possible without it labouring etc etc blah blah

As soon as I got off down the road, all that was thrown out the window. I didn't abuse it, but lets just say that you would have had to have a rocket up your arse to catch me. I put on a couple hundred k's before I came back.

My point, is that it went like the proverbial bat out of hell. I'd launch slowly, then plant the foot moments after I'd moved off (clutch fully out). The thing would break traction when it hit boost, and chirp into 2nd every single time. Just seemed so bloody fast.

Soon after, I made the journey through Melbourne (over Chrissy visiting the olds), on my way to Canberra where I am now. Whilst in Melbourne, I took the car out one day, and..... well it didn't seem as balls-out fast as it used to. At that point, I'd only done 2000kms.

In the end I just put it down to my having gotten used to the power. After reading that article in Motor mag though, I'm not so sure. The car overboosted (or fuel surged) in Melbourne at one point too (no idea if that makes any difference).

Anyway, I'll be getting Edit soon, so we'll soon see. Seems a tad lazy in 1st and 2nd, but again, could be that I've just gotten used to it.

Is abuse mode "learned"? Has my car identified me as a nutter, and therefore goes easy on the boost occassionally?

I had exactly the same thing with the BF I had for a week! first few days chirped secound in the auto every time then after that not so much

Wouldn't that mainly be due to a heatsoaked intercooler though?

From what I have read in Motor mag a lot of people put such things down to heat soak. but according to the artical I read that's actually the software kicking in.

Its more a case of cat protection, and a high temp power reduction to keep the temp down. When the temp gets to a certain level the ECU will start pulling back the timing and even boost levels to help keep the engine cool. It has nothing to do with abuse modes. The abuse modes are more likely to come into play on cold nights rather than hot days as the car is capable of making more power breathing in denser cold air than on a hot day.

What Martin said in the second last paragraph (and earlier in the article) is that the AM is triggered by events, or combinations of events. Try not to think of it as "learning" that you're a registered abuser.

Of course the ecu learns how you drive, so it can adjust for fuel efficiency or outright grunt, but that's not Abuse Mode/Torque Management. It sounds to me like the Abuse Mode activates on queue, and maybe keeps tabs on you for a few minutes, then switches back into standby. That's been my experience anyway.

Most notably, I have noticed a difference in power delivery between if you just floor it from the lights, or ease it off the line, then steadily apply more and more throttle, the latter working much better. I don't think this is a way around AM as such, more that that's how it prefers to be driven.

You can still drive your T fast, so long as you understand the AM "triggers", and adjust your driving accordingly. In the industry that's known as "Spirited Driving" rather than "Abuse"

I must Agree, After having my XR6T for 3weeks now it is just like woman you never know what your going to get, some days you just get lucky and others it's like Driving an Datto 120Y,

I must agree though that if you just floor it from the lights and go throught gears it does not feel as punchyas when you take of normally and then punch it through!!!

This trully is a frustrating driving experience and I will get flsahed in the next couple of weeks and say good bye to my moody T
