Torque Converter Died :(

Seems the torque converter has died in my 2003 XR6T. Started making a loud rumbling sound when the wife was driving to work Tuesday. Luckily she was almost outside the dealership.

Ford got the "specialist" out to look at it. He drove it, said "yes it's stuffed but I can see from the exhaust it's modified and hence not covered under warranty". That's all I've been told and certainly received nothing in writing.

Mods to the car are dual cat back exhaust and a unichip. (Sorry if I'm a little vague - it's was modified before I purchased it from another Ford dealership 2nd hand.)

I've now referred this to Ford Customer Complaints to see if I can get any further with them.

S'pose my questions are two-fold:

1. Do I have any chance of getting it fixed under warranty?

2. If I have to pay to get it fixed what are my options? I don't want this happening again and am also not keen on paying Ford's generally over inflated prices for repairs. (I haven't even been given a quote yet so it's obviously not going to be good.)

Very little chance of warranty.

If you have to pay, which you will, you could take it anywhere you want. After all it's your car and your money.

The only possible recourse I can see you may have is with the dealership that you bought it off I.e did they advise you that the car you were buying did not have a driveline warranty due to the mods.?

Long shot but worth a go....... Good luck :spoton:

How long ago did you buy your T??? As I'm fairly sure that 2nd hand dealers are forced into providing warranty (it's usually 3 months but can be longer) You might find that the dealer you brought the car off has to pay for repairs...

Was purchased almost 2 years ago so no chance of a 2nd hand vehicle warranty.

I'm going to chase up the contract of sale. I remember they added a bit in there about the engine not being covered under warranty due to the mods, but I'm not sure there was anything about the drivetrain. Certainly worth looking for.

Assuming this goes no where and I'm going to have to pay to get it fixed, that brings up my second question:

Find a local transmission place and get the TC replaced.

Do not bother with the warranty as it will not be worth the $800 it will cost to get it fixed.

Try to find a transmission place with a lot of taxis outside as they will be the best and cheapest.

Do not give Ford the money to fix it.

Sounds like a few phone calls required.

And yes I realise I can take it where ever I want (thanks again Adam :)). Just I've never had an auto before and have no idea of what's involved in the repair of the TC.

Should they be doing anything to it to make it more "solid" when I get the repair done?
