To all the tradies out there I need your advice.

I'm in the process of buying another vehicle as my current ride is not really appropriate to be carrying all my tools in anymore and I really do need more space.

My choices are

XR6T

XR8

4WD Turbo Diesel (Hilux, Rodeo, triton)

The car must be no more than 5 years old and has to be a manual.

I really have my heart set on the XR6T but I need to know how you find the XR's as a tradesman vehicle.

What I want to know is,

Are they practical in regards to site access?

Do they carry the wieght (loaded tub/tray with trailer as well) ok?

Fuel Economy?

Are the hard top tub lids useful or a waste of time?

Any other issues you can think of?

If I do get the XR it will be lowered, rims and Edit, so have modificatiions caused any problems at all.

I originally was gonna get a 4WD for easier site access but I really want the XR.

Any help would be greatly appreciated guys.

If you need extra clearance for a work site an RTV 5.4 V8 would be awesome. With a new airbox, exhaust and tune they can run mid 13's. Could carry more in the back and tow better than an XR.

access to the sites is no problems as long as you dont lower the XR...

the only problem I had was trying to keep it clean and out of way of other tradies who dont care if your car gets scratched.

the lid is practical and was great to keep tools dry and to keep tools out of sight of would be thieves in public car parks.

I cant see any problems with having the T as long as you dont lower it.

I have considered that but if I dont like the look of it too high. I'd rather buy a 4WD at least they look good the higher they get.

that's why I'm concerned with a lowered XR.

My lancer is pretty low at the moment and it has no problems with clearance....well not too many problems. I don't go driving in ruts or anything. I know my limits.

I mean if the XR is too low (and I have to lower it if I get one) can I still be relatively close to the job site most times. I only do domestic so I can't see to many issues with this but I need to hear it from guys who have been in the situation.

Mate ute is lowered and the bottom of the front bar is scraped to buggery but hey no one looks underneath, I have had to use the odd bit of touch up paint here and there in the last 2 years but it's not too bad.

I hope that helps, if not the T a Hilux with a bit of bling isn't a bad second prize!

that's what I wanted to hear.

Who cares about the front bar like you said no one looks under the bar.

How do you find the car carrying the loads (tools, trailer etc) any issues?

Does the suspension sag much?

Do you still get decent fuel consumption?

We've got a BA 6 cyl cab chassis with steel pantech on back at work and it's a POS. Handles like a waterbed. Should of used a one-tonner version. Rear springs have been upgraded but still too soft. Need to drive around in third gear (4 spd auto) all the time, even on highway as it is geared too tall or motor is lacking in grunt. It is a dedicated LPG motor though.

We also have another BA 6 cyl tray back that has a canvas rear pantech on it, goes better (petrol) but still too soft in suspension.

Also at work we have a 2005 Hilux 4cyl 2.7lt tray back with canvas pantech back - 1000% better than BA. Handles heaps better, much firmer without being uncomfortable. Goes heaps better too and uses heaps less petrol. Don't like the looks that much myself, too "chunky" at front, but mechanically it is very good. Very torquey for 4 cyl.

Hmmm now you worrying me.

It will be a manual T or XR8 mark II BA/BF only if I get the ford so that covers the power department. I will upgrade the springs for sure anyway so that hopefully will sort out any sagging issues.

Petrol wise, well...I do have a heavy right foot but if I could get around 400km to a tank I'd be happy.

Currently I can't get better than 350km to a tank in the lancer but it does spend a lot of time on boost. I just can't help myself.

My boss had a 03 rodeo turbo diesel and that hauls a loaded tub and trailer not a problem it aint fast but it does it with ease.

that's what im looking for, I don't want to hurt the car by dragging tools and timber around everywhere.

My dad had a XR6T ute for his tradies ute over 400Kg in the back every day + 1400Kg+ trailer most day, no problem a great wok ute, he now Uses a FPV Pursuit and that has been awesome to no problems (50,000Km) and I mean No Problems nothing.

Xr6T or Xr8 you can't lose mate :spoton:
