Give it up Zap, although I agree with your sentiments there is no point trying to explain it this place. Unfortunately there is still the gross misconception out there that EVERY employer is out to screw over EVERY employee. Gone are those days.

Wow, this has been an interesting debate...

Little Johnny and his IR reforms aside, when I received a redundancy I was informed that it was 2 weeks pay for every year of service plus a cash payout of all entitlements.

There was however a cap on how many weeks pay for years of service I was entitled to, however that cap did not apply to any payments for entitlements (holiday etc...) as these are effectively your regardless of redundancy. (When you leave a job normally your still usually paid out leave wise)

As for getting them to drive to Adelaide in their own time did they get anything in writing from their employer stating they'd be paid for it? if so get her to hold them to it. If not she can still challange them (what has she got to lose) as verbal agreements are still legally binding (just harder to prove) and with 3 people in the same boat your mum's arguments against the employer will have more merit.

I`m sorry if I opened a can of worms, hope it all works out for your mum and even though I have not been a victim to any of this own my own house, car and don`t have any debts I feel sorry for the everyday people that will be made to struggle.If business would only stop being greedy there is plenty of money to go around.
