Steering Creak - Can It Be Fixed?

I'm in the process of getting a number of warranty issues resolved, one of which is the classic 'steering creak' common to the BA's.

Well after 3 attempts Ford still have not been able to fix it :spoton:

I've got it booked in for an entire day in 2 weeks time, where they said they will go through the whole front end and look for the cause which they guess may be in the struts or suspension rather than the rack.

The 'creaking' noise occurs when turning right at speed (ie 'loading up' the steering on a turn). It also sometimes happens when parking. I've taken 2 of the Ford staff through a roundabout at speed and both have heard & felt the noise.

They tried the stainless steel shim and chamfering, to no avail...

My question is - can this actually be resolved, and if so, what might the techies have missed the first 3 times around?

Thanks for any pointers

Yes... The bolts on the rack and also the locating pins need to be absolutely smothered in Loctite....

Only thing that got rid of mine.. Tightening the bolts was temporary, but the locating pins still creaked.... Once is all welded up with locktite it actually make the steering feel more direct.

More info please, mine started creaking a little while ago and is now that load people look at you in car parks :spoton:

if I remove the rack mount bolts, replace with new ones drowned in 262 and do the pins you speak of, will this fix it?

Sorry to drag an old thread up, but just thought I'd let people know that on the 4th attempt Ford managed to fix the steering creak and it's all gone :sleepystuff:

They applied TSB 78/04 which I believe involved shimming both sides of the rack where the bolts pass through to remove all play. The workshop foreman had the car for the whole day which I think is what did the trick.

In any case, my steering is silent and I'm happy!
