my mate recently bought a wrx from sydney, and I too warned him of the dangers of second hand wrxs, or any turbo car for that matter... especially because the guy offered him a front mount intercooler, plus this already had an exhaust.. needless to say, he owned it for around 10000km, and had to get rid of it cheap as its turbo was playing!

Its so hard to buy a second hand wrx... my other friend, the one whos mum owns STIs... he hammered his 1998 rex, and when he sold it he palmed it off to his mum to do the sale...    poor bugger whoever bought that thing!! it got so many high rev rpm dumps!!

I was going to buy his mums STI, as I know it hadn't been flogged, but she sold it before I could get into contact!! now she has the 06, so I guess I got 3 or so years to wait if I want her one now 

I'll shop around and see what I can come up with! and yeah, I might ring up about insurance first... as one massive insurance bill might be enough!

I'll keep you guys posted, and I'll post up any possible cars I'm thinking of!

I sold a 98 model WRX in good condition,1 owner(lady) for $14500.It was stock and had not been flogged.The only down side is it had 180 000kms on it.

when was this??? I got $24K for my 98 rex 2 years ago... cant imagine the price coming down that much in 2 years

I couldnt move it in todays market.I had $16000 on it and all I got was 17y old tyre kickers wanting to drive it but had no money.I sold it to a mate for $14500

For $25K I would go for a 01 onwards.

The build quality is great.

Gearbox is a drama if you want to dump it, having said that, one of mine had 175Kwatw and the box was fine.

As for buying one with mods, I wouldn't let that be a factor, so long as it has been tuned for them, no dramas.

The last one I sold had done 80,000kms+ and never had a cent spent on fixing anything.

Diff between 01 and 02, is the gearing changed. 03>got sh*t interior.

Having said that, I may be biased as I am purchasing another Sti. After driving around in AU Tickford Fairmont Ghia for the last month. I realised I wouldn't be able to overlook how second rate the Fords are, just because it has the potential to go quick in a straight line.
