I'm thinking of buying a second hand wrx for the missus as our second car. The little laser is starting to rack up the kms.

Any members here own or have owned wrxs?? I've driven a couple, and my best mate had one, plus his mum has owned STI's for the last 7 years or so. I know they are decent cars.

I saw a 1997 wrx with 'apparently' only 18600km.. it looks very tempting, but I might need to ring up first. Could have been a typo and probably was meant to read 186000

Is there anything I should know, or in particular that I should ask?? And are there any forum members here currently selling their wrx?? probably looking to spend a max of $25,000..

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

James.

mate just bought a 99 wrx wagon, bog stock, manual, 120k's ish on the clock, about 20k he paid me thinks.

your one worry with second hand wrx's is the treatment of previous owner. alot... I mean ALOT, of them have been thrashed so the type of person your buying off is as important as the car.

The gearbox is a WRX weakness.

My wife had an '01 RX Imprezza. We only sold the car earlier this year as we needed a bigger car for the kids getting older. The car was great the whole time we had it and Renata loved it. Nothing went wrong in 5 years and the build quality was good.

I know this is about a RX and not a WRX but I hope the feedback helps.

I’ve had 5 rexes since ’97, and have 3 Sti’s at home.

I wouldn’t buy the MY97, and it’s a lot cheaper now, turbo a bit too small, and brakes not as good as subsequent models. (I owned one).

MY00 …2000 model (classic old shape) is also good.

Don’t touch the bug-eye slugs…. MY01/2 … not so good to drive.

You might pick up a MY03 for around $25-30, especially those that are up for lease and being traded now, for people upgrading to the MY06 2.5 litre. MY03 introduced variable valve cam timing, and far better to drive. I had one, and traded it. Wife’s car, she loved it, and it was stock standard, and not a single problem in 3 years.

Don’t buy anything that’s modded, and look for signs of go-fast bits being pulled off.

Gearbox is a weakness only if you put a large amount of torque into it through mods, or do regular 7000rpm launches. We got 7 years out of MY97 gearbox, and that had a 50% power increase over standard, and then only after my son bought it and gave it a hammering.

Check out insurance first ... not cheap.

Brian

cheers for the replies guys!

my mate recently bought a wrx from sydney, and I too warned him of the dangers of second hand wrxs, or any turbo car for that matter... especially because the guy offered him a front mount intercooler, plus this already had an exhaust.. needless to say, he owned it for around 10000km, and had to get rid of it cheap as its turbo was playing!

Its so hard to buy a second hand wrx... my other friend, the one whos mum owns STIs... he hammered his 1998 rex, and when he sold it he palmed it off to his mum to do the sale... poor bugger whoever bought that thing!! it got so many high rev rpm dumps!!

I was going to buy his mums STI, as I know it hadn't been flogged, but she sold it before I could get into contact!! now she has the 06, so I guess I got 3 or so years to wait if I want her one now :fool:

I'll shop around and see what I can come up with! and yeah, I might ring up about insurance first... as one massive insurance bill might be enough!

I'll keep you guys posted, and I'll post up any possible cars I'm thinking of!

Cheers

I'd watch it with older subi's period... Once they hit 10 years it's almost like they fall apart. We thought we had simply got a lemon until I talked to other subi owners and they almost all said that at 10 years the car will basically fall apart almost as if there was a timer installed...

That been said if you can get yourself a newer Subi and flog it off before it's 10 you'll have one very nice car...
