Ok ive been having a bit of trouble with my T. When cold, it runs fine, as the temp rises to around a quarter the car starts to surge and splutter while driving, doesn't matter whether its under load or just free wheeling. It carries on like this for a few minutes then settles fown to normal. Overall performance of the car is good and doesnt seem to be affected.

Anyway..

A friend of mine is the service manager for a Ford dealer (very handy) so he hooked up their CPU to my car and found the following error codes..

P1340 camshaft position sensor b

P1381 timing over advance B1

P 1386 timing over advance B2

XR6T's arent a popular car down here and therefore he hasnt had much experience with them. He suggested removing the rocker cover and checking the timing sensors, as they tend to collect all sorts of grime, he said to give them a clean and this might fix the problem..

Any advice???

He isnt fixing it because he is the service manager, not a mechanic that works on the cars. Also my car isnt under warranty with his dealer, so any work done there is at my cost. Basically he finds out what the mechanics would do to my car, and I perform the repairs.

Maybe I should re-phrase my question.

Has anyone had similar problems, or got the same codes?

Mate if your car is still within it's new car warranty period it's covered by warranty at ALL Ford dealers, not just the one you purchased the car from.

In any case it looks like you have some sort of timing problem for sure, which would explain why it's running rough at times.

I've asked a friend of mine who knows a bit about these things to have a look at this thread and see if he can help you. Stay tuned. :sleepystuff:

And what's more, dealers claim back the cost of warranty work from Ford right? I was told it's in their own interest to take on warranty work in most cases (assuming it's legit etc etc).

As for the codes, Fords should be able to tell you what you need to know. They have numerous manuals on hand to detail the various procedures to undertake. Customers usually don't get to see the codes that get flagged, unless they ask.

Looks like you need to get them to dig into their manuals for you.

Good luck with it.

Pumped81,

Firstly if your car is still covered by the 3year/100,000km warranty then you can have it looked at and repaired at "ANY" Ford dealer in the country.

Code P1340 indicates there is either a problem with the Camshaft Position Sensor CID2(I6 Exh camshaft) sensor circuit or sensor coherency(a difference in both cam sensor readings). This is more than likely a direct result of the other codes that have been logged.

Code P1381 & P1386 indicates both camshafts are over advancing. This can be caused by the one of the OCV's(Oil Control Valve) going into fully closed position. The other camshaft then has to play "catch up" so to speak and hence the 2 codes. Now if you go back to the first code (P1340) it is a pretty safe bet to say that it's the Exhaust Cam OCV that is the problem. There is a good chance that it will only require cleaning and,to be honest, unless you are mechanically minded and able it's not the sort of thing you should take on.

It could also be the wiring to the OCV's has shorted to earth and is holding one of the OCV's closed. This is reasonably simple to check.Just remove the air intake off the top of the engine and remove the black plastic coil cover off the rocker cover.Have seen a couple short out the wires on the raised mounting point at the front end of the rocker cover.(see attached pic)

To be honest,if it's under warranty get the dealer to do it.

Hope this helps

FORDTECH you rock...

A brilliant example as to why this forum is in existence...

The sharing of info is one of the main reasons as to why I'm here... without it I and many others are on their own with warranty/quality control issues...

Nice one!
