Romulus Donating Members 1,279 Member For: 20y 1m 3d Location: Perth Posted 10/02/06 11:06 AM Share Posted 10/02/06 11:06 AM (edited) I had the priviledge of tuning a BF Tornado 6-speed auto ute from one of the Perth forum members yesterday, with Barry from BPT Motorsport in attendance as well.The ute had approximately 400km's on the odo and put down a baseline of 225rwkw in stock trim. With the addition of bigger injectors, bigger dump pipe, twin cats and a cat back system and a retune it now pumps out a healthy 297.5rwkw It makes a calculated 750nm at the flywheel now, with the stock power output showing bang on 550nm.On the road the ute went like a cut snake, until a hose from the turbo blew off. That was soon rectified. The power delivery with the auto is truly phenominal, and doesn't stop pulling. I'd say a 6-speed manual with the same power, or even a little more, would have a hard job keeping up with the auto - from a standing start or on the roll.Graph is attached.Greg, I'm jealous now and want one Ben, you'll have no chance now Edited 10/02/06 11:09 AM by M6 XR6T Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I don't claim to be any dyno seer but it looks to me like there's little point revving beyond 5000rpm, let alone 6000????I look forward to the Tornado showdown. F6_Tornado F6+300+ Member 940 Member For: 20y 2m 30d Location: In The Ute Posted 10/02/06 10:40 PM Share Posted 10/02/06 10:40 PM This all came about a bit sooner than I would have expected as I removed my old Stainless exhaust of my BA F6 and had it fitted to this new one and that’s where it all went pair shaped.We did a dyno run before and after changing the exhaust and the vehicle became un-drivable with just the exhaust change as it would overboost and spit the dumby.The dyno went 226rwkws in shootout 6 mode. (Factory map)A/F were @ 10.5Boost peaked @ 9psiThen on the dyno 1 hour later with exhaust fitted it went 265.6RWkws in shootout 6 mode. (Factory map)A/F went to 14.5 at 4500rpm (were fine until @ 3000rpm)Boost was OK up to @ 3000RPM then climbed to 12PSI.Needles to say I couldn’t/wouldn’t drive it on the road as it was with the A/F and over-boosting on the factory map.This lead to having a tune done to get the A/F and boost back under control so the Ute was drivable (Safe to drive). Id like to Thank Barry for taking the time to help out on such short notice as he is so busy atm.As Jason has indicated, she only had 400km on the clock so when Barry Batton and Jason did a safe map for me they did it with caution and didn’t try and screw the guts out of it and came up with probably the smoothest map I’ve had.The auto can be a tricky beast on the dyno as it wont Lock into gear so the ramp-up can vary slightly, also we tried it in 4th and came up with the same rwkws but when the speedo hit 220kmh the dyno operator said that’s enough and didn’t want to take it any higher hence the 3rd gear which seems to be what everyone else is using.In simple terms I had @ 315rwkws in the manual and it was quick no worries about that and I liked the manual but!!!!! Hell this auto is something else and no way even with less rwkws is the manual going to get anywhere near it even in day to day driving as its one smart transmission, the way it uses the gears its so manual if that makes any sense?At first it was well Ok … yeah it’s not a bad transmission, actually quite good…then as the days go by and you start to try a few more things you soon come to realize this thing is very very smart indeed!!! I suppose the Strength of these ZF’s is an unknown quantity at present and no doubt they are not cheap, but hell someone has to blaze a trail so all the fence sitters can find out “if” they can crank up their HP!!!!!I do however feel confident as this is the same transmission that is used in the VW Touareg V10 twin turbo with 750nm torque Std and they chip them up to @ 1000nm and I’ve yet to hear of one fail a transmission. The whole package looks sleeker than BA with the 19's on it. Interior, well, his might go missinbg next week..Auto is very smooth, and deceptive. We hooked up the scan tool and took some quick times..Same road, same time, same tuner, nearly the same power.. From what I remember ( Correct me papps if I get it wrong )Auto. -- 0-100 in 4.38 seconds, 1/8th mile in 8.70 seconds @ 79mph.Man. -- 0-100 in 4.79 seconds, 1/8th mile in 8.50 seconds @ 85mphBoth runs were with two of us in the car..Ambient temps were 32 deg C. Intake air temps on both our cars were over 65deg C.Auto was quickest, by a few 1/10ths in 'D' with no stalling up. Just plonk the foot to the floor and go. Stalling saw wheelspin carried thru the gears and slow times, but impessive skids..My 2-3 change ( I think ) was quicker to get back on the boil than the auto, picking up a few tenths.. Maybe the auto is a touch tall??The problem was, the auto did it so effortlessly, and it is repeatable over and over. I did 2 runs ( one recorded, the other one Mr 5 thumbs deleted off the screen before I could see it... ) and had to work the throttle to get away cleanly. Alot of work....... Driveline harshness in the manual is alot more, I feel for the clutch.. Impressive stuff from 2 tonnes of ute, with a pre-historic leaf sprung rear.. Then there was the guy in the skyline with an intercooler that took up half the front of his car... hahah.. poor bugga. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
