Went back to the drags the other day to have another go this time with the TC off.

The first time when I had my TC on my best time was 14.16 @163.2. Now with the TC off I got 13.454 @ 170.81 Still slow for a car with an auto and 285rw.There was around 20km hour direct front on wind would this effect the times much? :spoton:

Wind would affect speed, but I am not sure that it would be much.

Are you stalling the car up before take-off? The guys on here seem to be stalling to 2000 - 2500 before launching.

Hi, no I haven't tried stalling up, seemed to be good grip on the strip so I dont think that was an issue. My mph was all over the place 175.53-170.82.Might try stalling up next time but it can't be good for the gearbox.

that's why your times are crap you have to stall it up

Hi, thanks for that will do next time. A bit of a learning curve. I really want to break into the 12s.

To get the fastest time you basically need to be launching with as many revs as you can without masses of wheelspin. (a little wheelspin is ok).

By flooring it from standstill you have to wind up the torque converter and rest of the drivetrain - which will lose you some time. I am certainly no expert but I would have thought a second could easily be gained from a harder start.

Unfortunately this is hard on the transmission - no doubt about that.

The drag racing boys may be able to give you more tips - but one other one is to improve your reaction time. A mate of mine who has quite slow reactions always went one light early (though if your reactions are quick you may jump the start). Do some practice - there are pc based things you could find on the internet.

Other things to try - try manual changing vs auto changing and see which is quicker for you.

If you got better tyres - can start with a higher stall, but again will be harder on transmission, diff, cvs.

Dont be scared to break into massive wheelspin. Do it, then back off a little the next time.

just a few more suggestions try and reduce the weight of your vehicle,

take out the spare tyre run and any other items which may reduce your weight, try with only half a tank of fuel or less, drop the pressure in your tyres to about 22psi. do a little burnout to warm them up, as above stall up to 2000 - 2500 rpm.

Good luck with getting your 12 sec pass

285 rwkw should see you well into the 12's, even mid to low.

Heres how.

Assuming stock auto, tyres and stall convertor.

Set your tyres to 18-20psi.

Do a nice, but not huge burnout, the stock dunny's dont heat up much anyway, it more to clean them. I ussually do it in Drive, the car can select 2nd when it wants then.

Stage up, FORGET ABOUT THE LIGHTS, it wont affect your time, your time starts whan you break the front beam, so stage as shallow as you can, this is, when the first light comes on, creep foward as slow as you can so you JUST turn on the second light, this will allow the car to move about 300mm before your time starts, it also mean you are off the brakes and on the gas when you cross the line.

Put the car in to Performance mode, but still in auto, let it change the gears, I am yet to better the times when self shifting, so as you stage, slide selector over to the left, and leave it.

Stall up to 2000rpm, this is a good starting point, you should not get too much spin if the track is clean and tryres pressures are correct. when its time to go, step of the brake with left foot and floor it,

Stalling up isnt as hard on the drive line as you think, all the uni's aetc are loaded up so there isnt any shock load, its tough on the auto if you hold it for too long, but a few seconds once staged wont hurt.

Again, forget the light, the other guy and reaction time, dont go until your ready, make sure your RPM is spot on, and hold it flat all the way home.

if you have 285rwkw, you should be around 12.4 to 12.6 depending on your 6-0ft time, which should be abour 2.1-2.4sec, your mph should be 115-116 mph, and tyre spin etc wont change that, your mph will tell you how much HP you have.

last and most important part; HAVE FUN.

Best of luck.

Almost forgot, DONT RUN with any less than half atank of fuel unless you have asurge tank and external tank, the swirl pot is very small and at the front of the tank, if you hold it flat, by about 4000rpm third gear, you will run out of fuel, the car will die in the bum.

HALF tank minimum.

Several other will tell you the same, the 25kilo you save in weight is not worth it, loose the spare/jack instead, they weigh 29kg's.

Excellent post Eugene - I think that covers the DIY drag racing for XR6T Auto owners perfectly.

I'll be heading down to the creek myself in a couple weeks - this thing's got to do a much better time than the old V8 Soarer at 15.8 - what a slug.

Interesting what you say about the fuel in the tank, last time I ran down the strip I think I had about 100km to empty on the clock, and it felt like the power was surging... going from normal power to what seemed to be reduced timing (possibly due to knock sensor... if there was a lack of fuel?)... I couldnt break back into the 13s either. I'll give that a go with half a tank next time... thanks for the advice - good write up (although I dont have an auto but it's still good advice).

Steve
