Not driven as hard as it should be, but it's my wife's car (I have the bike). The whine only started a few weeks ago and occurs when you back off the throttle between about 70-110 km/h while in 4th gear (in Drive). It's not loud, but it's definately new. The whine stops as soon as you slap the stick across to Perf (when it grabs 3rd) or speed decreases enough to take the engine-braking load off it. Gearbox feels fine otherwise.I am clueless about auto gearboxes and I have no idea about what the noise might be or how it came about (no towing of any note).Any ideas before it goes in for the 60k service next week? (in the panel shop right now, again, after a P-plater backed into the front bar, "Oh no, this is my 3rd accident this week!". ) Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/23010-whine-in-auto-gearbox/ Share on other sites

With your k's being over 50,000 though they will most likely opt for a rebuild rather than a replacement. All the best with it in any case. But, not being an expert, maybe that's where the noise enters the cabin - through the hole cut in the floorpan for the shifter? And I'll take a rebuild!!I'll let you all on Tuesday when it goes in. I'm expecting the big 'there's nothing wrong, that's standard'. I'll post later tonight. The noise is definately there, and it's definately new, and it's definately only in 4th gear (auto). Apparently there was not only a whine in 4th, but also in 1st and reverse... They've advised FoMoCo and Ion and will let me know. Said they were unsure whether Ion would deliver a whole new gearbox, new gears for rebuild, or simply an additive (WTF!).Also fixed passenger side air vent, machined front discs (slight shudder) and ordered new ICC (CD stacker on premium setup very erratic on what it will and won't play - even on brand new CDs). Happy with service so far - Gregory's Ford in Canberra.Funny thing is, I never got a copy of the paperwork (usually do).... also had 60k service done. But on lease, so I don't see cost anyway until it hits my account. Maybe there was something on there not for my eyes? Mines only ever done it with burnt CD's (only had the car 4 months) so I was putting it done to the fact they were burnt but maby I have a problem similar to yours. The CD will be playing fine then when one track ends it goes to play the next one and you can hear the CD player trying to read the disc & after about 5 seconds it spits the disc out. It seems to do it more offten if you go straight to a track rather than let the whole CD play. Is this what yours was doing?
