Proposed Australian Road Rule 151A: Making lane filtering through stationary traffic illegal for motorcycles.

The Australian Road Rules Maintenance Group has officially released their recommended rule changes, among them is new rule 151A, which will make it illegal for lane filtering by motorcycles and scooters. A large majority of riders are opposed to this new rule as several significant bodies of research indicate filtering is indeed very safe and can actually improve a riders safety. There has been no such evidence to suggest that this practice is unsafe or dangerous.

Many motorcycle and scooter riders filter through stopped or slow

moving traffic, but there are some positive safety benefits to this

practice:

- When riders filter to the front of traffic lights, they benefit

from a larger survival space as they can accelerate away from other

vehicles.

-In stationary or slow moving traffic, filtering prevents riders from being ‘sandwiched’ between two vehicles.

- Filtering reduces the liklihood of a rider being involved in a

rear end collision. Rear end collissions represented 23% of all

Queensland crashes in 2002, according to the ‘Queensland Transport

Annual Road Traffic Crash Report: 2002’.

- The HURT study concluded that filtering reduced the crash frequency of riders when compared to sitting in stop/go traffic

- The

Motorcycle Accident In Depth Study (MAIDS) indicates that only .03% of 921 investigated

accidents involved a rider ‘Filtering forward between lanes, in both

longitudinal and lateral motion’.

-Filtering also reduces congestion, dramtically shortens the length of

traffic jams, and increases the road carrying capacity without the need

for high capital investments to expand roadway capacities. Every

motorist can benefit from filtering riders

We DO NOT support the dangerous practice of lane splitting, which involves riders going between vehicles that are moving at speeds in excess of 15km/h.

Thank christ they are doing something about that. I fcuking hate motorbikes that do that.

Atleast it'll save me from opening my car door when I see a bike coming from now on..

Yes, flame me, but motorbike riders are not above the law, and crossing the white solid line before the lights incurs $100 and 2 point deduction. I see no reason for bikes to get away with it.

end rant.

It is about time they made it illegal in all states.

It is not jelousy, it is damn dangerous.

I had a bike lane split me while doing 80km/h in moderate traffic + I have had my car damaged by them lane splitting.

I have also seen 2 dead riders who were accidents waiting to happen and did.

I have spoken to highway patrol cops in NSW and it was only illegal if they went between a car and the kerb, not between cars, this is a good law, that I am sure will be ignored but the majority of selfish motor bike riders.

Law-shlaw. F6 UTE you gotta be kidding me? Since when did Aussies become a pack of whingeing, law abiding, dobbers?

Fairdinkum, who cares if they go straight to the front? As long as they hammer when the lights to green I couldn't care less (and 95% of 'em do). In fact, if anything I prefer it if they clear traffic by lane splitting. Last thing I need is some bloke in front of me on two wheels dawdling in traffic...

????

Sorry, when you mean 'hammer when the lights go green' you mean pop a mono, rev the fcuck out of the first 4 gears then start to slow down... All to proove they have a 'bad mutha fcuking bike'..

Sorry, I'm as anti-bike as you can get. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate a nice bike as much as the next guy, my best mate even has a CBR 1000 RR ( damn nice bike ), but I fcuking hate the attitude of (some of) the riders, even his sometimes, and he knows it..

Ther's the odd one who obeys the speed limit, yes. I do ( for the most part ) and my driving record and 12 intact points will reflect that.

I can be the most courtious motorist on the roads, I let ppl in thru traffic all the time, but I can also be the most obnoxious w@anker you've ever met, bikes just sh!t me.

btw, I love the new rear facing multinovas..

About bloody time..

I've lost count of the amount of bikes that have got infront of me at a set of lights only to slow me down on take off. I feel like running them down sometimes, infact I almost have on so many occasions cause they just don't take off fast enough.

Then they get the sh*ts at the next set of lights, well not my bloody fault they take my prime position at the lights and take of slower than I do.

This one wanker on the way home today kept doing it, over 5 red lights he continually kept going infront of me. Even though I'd be right up his arse till I could move into the next lane and overtake him.

Mind you the few bikies I see taking off really fast don't bother me. It's the ones that slow me down that do.
