So meaning I didn't just pass??? I thought I JUST passed the limit!

Like said above, don't flog the car with the "plate" installed. It'll be fine

Mate, if noise is the only thing the EPA is testing.... you'll be OK.

You better hope they don't do an emissions test.

With the mods you've done, there's no telling what the readout will produce.

What state you in?

Legally emissions tests are to be done on a dyno and cost a bloody fortune, been through all that stuff with my last car, you dont wanna go there, but if you did, all you'd have to do is put it back onto its stock tune for the test, too easy.

Don't stress...

Just get it below 90dB and you will be fine, shouldn't effect your tune, maybe the computer will over compensate and run slightly rich while there is a blockage in the system...

They will not do a full emissions test unless it is stated on your notice, it comes with the 3rd excessive noise complaint on the car you know you have one of these because you are required to go to Macloud out near Greensborough for the tailpipe test... I know from personal experience... 3 on an AE92 4AGE Corolla and 2 on my old Senator... the guy there knows my face and is even nice to me...

Place a blockage in between where the cat gasket is though no bigger than the cat gasket but is able to be bolted in with the bolts that hold your exhaust together at the flange (know what I mean?)... making sure it doesn't from the outside look like you have added anything in there..., chicken wire or perferated steel of some kind with a small amount of steel wool wired to it, this will get your car down to an acceptable level and hey presto, your under the limit... if you aren't confident doing it yourself, I had an exhaust place make up the 'blockage' for me and fit it as well...

Don't stress too much if you fail you can take the test again, the only pain the as$ is that you have to pay $27.50 for the first and each test after that... can get expensive if you have to keep going back... and the time off work and all of that too...

Good Luck

Edit- The test is taken at 75% (should be 4375rpm in an XR6T) of maximum factory rev limit (5900rpm)... so don't tell them that Simon has raised yours to 6500rpm...

Mate....  When I first registered the 68 corvette, I was 2 dB over.. :spoton:

To get through the test, I just rammed a wad of steel wool into each muffler...

I then stuffed some some cut-up chicken wire in, with exposed wire forks, to lock onto the holes in the muffler core  ( this was so the steel wool wouldn't come flying out during the test.

At the retest, I came in 3 dB under.....  so a 5dB drop in sound pressure level..

total cost....  $2  for some steel wool and a bit of chicken wire.. :pinch:

Not a good permanent fix, as it restricts flow, but will get you through the test.

Then just remove the crap and run it like it was before....

or

get the exhaust modified properly for a legal fix...  and

Yes, it will affect your custom tune....  How much will depend on the additional restriction to flow.

ps... How come you had to go through a test.....  Had you been picked up for excessive noise?

Done this before and it does work very well and is a cheap option..

Good luck with it mate...

as I said don't stress about it too much, it's not worth it, you will pass it if you really want to, just a matter of time or $... in that order.

I have passed and failed 4 or 5 tests... more of pain in the as$... my corolla on it's first run made 109db... as you can imagine I failed but the tester said it was one of his loudest... not something to be proud of but as a P-Plater at the time I was...:fool::smilielol::msm:

That's it mate...

Jesus talk about deafening! haha The young hoon days hey Jack!

Gotta have em...

I eventually got it down to 91dB in the corolla before I performed the above 'modification' and got down to 87dB and a pass.. my GOD it was loud before that though... the neighbours hated me... to tell you the truth, I hated the car, it was too loud...

The Senator on the other hand was and always was 89dB, just defected twice for it for being too loud... but it never was... go figure, the fuzz are only guessing anyway when they dob you in...

Good Luck with it...
