so an XR8 box would be better for a transplant into a mk1 than a XR6T box as I plane on retaining the original diff ratios.

Yes, as far as ratios go that is true. However you need to suss out the bellhousing arrangement regarding input shaft length and clutch actuation to be sure you can use the V8 box behind the 6. If you pose the question to Ben in the Mal Woods section of Mods forum he will be able to give you all the gen. :spoton:

PS Mal Woods conversion uses a box with the following ratios which would also work very well with a MkI ...

2.07

1.43

1.00

0.8

0.62

As you can see it gives you closer ratios in the intermediates for better roll-on accelleration.
