I have got a BA Fairmont that I am looking to turbo, but first I want to get it legally registered as a turbo before the heavy mods start getting put on.

I have listed the differences I know of. If I have overlooked anything please add.

Obviously Turbo,manifold,intercooler associated piping

Fuel pressure reg, lower compression, computer software(tuning)

Now what I am not sure on is how different is the N/A computer is compared to the Turbo computer as I have a feeling the N/A computer does not read boost and the computer just cant be reflashed with turbo software.

The differences in the driveline are of no concern as my main aim is just to legally register it as a turbo.

Any suggestions to do this in WA appreciated

N/A computer is different as you say there is an extra plug on the turbo ones.

In my opinion the best way is to buy a engine from a wreck. You will get engine, trans, turbo, computer, for about $4000. You could sell your trans and engine for about $2000 to a taxi, I am sure. THis way it would be easy. I belive the main loom is the same as the turbo, as most turbos have a plug in the engine bay that is used for the N/A.

If you bought all this seperate it would cost heaps. You could also buy a wreck.

see http://www.fowles.com.au/ and go to wrecked cars section

Agreed. Crazy if you want to convert the existing engine, you would be looking at least $10k.

Just put in a turbo motor and your on your way.

As everyone has stated buying the turbo motor and wiring harness is your cheapest option. The N/A motor also has different pistons from the turbo to alow the lower compression and the intake manifold is slightly different in the respect that the turbo doesn't have the variable length intake butterflies.

Im guessing you've got something like this Ghia in mind.

I am in a bit of a dilemma. Basically I have all the goodies like bosch motorsport pump, TO4Z, racegate, intercooler, EMS 8860, basically all the bits and pieces to transfer into the BA. I am even considering stripping the engine and putting rods /pistons/valve springs.

The only problem is that it wont be legal as its not registered as a turbo and I wouldn't be able to register it with all the above aftermarket stuff.

Buying an turbo engine and transferring the stock bits and pieces may be the only way to do it but most of the turbo stuff will not be used in the end.

At least if its legally registered as a turbo, I am more likely to get insurance.

Why don`t you contact nizpro as they have a turbo territory and would have gone through the same issues. I think that fairmont with the turbo was done by nizpro as well.

Its only the emissions side of things that is the headache with aftermarket add ons. This is really the problem with getting this thing legally registered with the modified add ons.
