For an aircraft wing this shape generates uplift as the velocity of the air passing over the curved section of the wing increases the wind velocity resulting in decreased pressure over the top of the wing thus creating a pressure differential between the underside of the wing and the upper wing. We now have lift off. I would therefore suggest that the reason for the large front air dam and rear spoiler in racing machines is to counter the effect of uplift at speeds greater than say 160 KMPH. Anyone with knowledge of aerodynamics would look at it and half a second later tell you that.I would be surprised if much thought went into its design from an aerodynamic point of view - its there for looks NOT downforce. In fact Id put money on the fact it may even slow down the car way more than any potential top speed downforce on the rear wheels. How about this: rip it off, and if you happen to be doing a bunch of 200kmh+ runs in your car, stick 2 x 2 litre bottles of milk in the boot to make up for the tiny amount of downforce you will be missing.... How many cars do you see at the drags without spoilers? Take it off phil, you won't notice a difference with down force imo. my be is they are purley aesthetic. As a few people have pointed out without the spoiler there is no way to tell where the end of the car is,drove and Xt hire car and found it very hard to gauge the distance when reversing so I think if you better have reversing sensors if you are going to take the spoiler off other wise touch parking is the order of the day. Venom XR6 Member 1,460 Member For: 21y 9m 28d Location: Geelong Victoria Posted 04/01/06 07:10 AM Share Posted 04/01/06 07:10 AM I'm trying to find an article in Motor of the development of the EL GT from a few years ago. It had a few pages of the testing done on the rear wing to provide downforce, they even had the different wings put on Glenn Setons V8 SC to test them at high speeds. This may give some insight into how much difference a wing can make on a road car, so when I find it I'll post the details.
