He is a self-proclaimed fan of the ZF 6 Speed Auto (as testified by his previous BF reviews) but he does pick up on one slight down-side. That it can be a bit slow in down-changing (no probs up changing).http://www.webwombat.com.au/motoring/news_...-ute-review.htmI currently drive a BF XR6T (Silhouette actually like the one you're thinking about getting ) and I actually think it is a little slow off the mark compared with my previous BA MkI XR6 normally aspirated in Sequential Shift (manual) mode only (NB Only in Sequential Shift mode - no issues with launching in Sports Performance). However, once the turbo spools up, she's off like thunder bolt! I actually have more confidence in leaving it in Sports Performance (auto) mode and just flooring it past the accelerator's detent. I find that if I do that, I think it's actually faster (have not timed anything yet - just a perception) than trying to launch off in Sequential Shift mode. Even though I have dialled up 1st gear to launch from, I sort of get a noticeable pause between the time I floor it and the time I actually launch - it's as if putting the ZF in Sequential Shift mode actually dumbs down the transmission to the point that maybe it's default behaviour is to be conservative and to launch conservatively. From my observations, in Sequential Shift mode, apart from protecting itself at the rev limit, the ZF is pretty much at your mercy and does not seem to have any smarts what so ever - hence, my comment that maybe its default behaviour is to err on the side of conservative and is not so agressive in launching in Sequential Shift mode (contrary to what I experienced driving my BA 4 speed auto in Sequential Shift mode). However, I'm not discounting that maybe I still need to run it in a bit more. I've got just over 4000 km on the ODO so far - not that much. Maybe it does need to loosen up some more. I also don't class myself as an agressive sports driver. So, maybe the ZF has "learned" that and hence my observations above? Having said all the above, I think the ZF 6 speed auto is great for what I do which is mainly city driving in Sports Performance and the occassional twisty bits in Sequential Shift mode. I have not driven the manual 6 speed T56 in a BF, so don't feel qualified to comment on it. I honestly don't think you can go wrong by choosing the ZF 6 Speed Auto because so many others are happy with it as well as myself.

This car only had 20klms on it so it wasn't a very good judge of the cars true ability. Off idle torque was quite ordinary and if you needed a bit of squirt you really needed to floor the pedal to get the thing to kick down but I'm am sure this would have to improve with more klms onboard. seventytwo Still have a turbo, it's just on a diesel. The ZF may change my mind on autos, The T56 is a good strong box but it is not as refined as most Jap manuals I have driven , the ZF is world class and you wont find many better autos out there. When I bought the MKii the choice was clear the T56 was the best option, now the choice is a lot harder I still love my manual but I would hate to say it I would pick the ZF 6speed. The only cause for concern is will the auto handle the power some of the people on here will end up putting through them.
HellionXR6T I'm Back!! Thats right, long over due! :) Lifetime Members 4,348 Member For: 22y 4m 6d Gender: Male Location: West Brisbane Posted 01/01/06 12:09 PM Share Posted 01/01/06 12:09 PM I loved the ZF when I took (a BF Shockwave) for a test drive and yes I was thinking, hmm, should I wait for the BF runout? Very impressed with the smooth, quiet operation of the ZF, the intelligent shifting while applying brakes downhill is something to try, absolutley awesome. The gear changes are soo much smoother then the 4 speed SSS and the response time seems to be a little quicker. Try one out, see if you like it.In all honesty, I still prefer the 6 speed manual (T56). More so for the aggression factor I think This 2nd hand MKII shockwave came my way and yep, couldn't be happier. Mmm, hurry up Tuesday, no more T5, diff klunk ("within tolerances"), rattles, blah...blah....
Guest XR666TURBO Guests Posted 01/01/06 12:40 PM Share Posted 01/01/06 12:40 PM Good points "seventytwo". that's really the dilemma. I'm not a total rev-head or anything... but I want to be able to thrash the car when I choose to. I have read the review that Feann Torr did on the BF XR8 Ute. And he said the only downside it had was down-changing. Which isn't a problem in "racing" conditions... The biggest problem is that no one on here has had the testing experience. I am just being so picky on this subject because if I'm going to spend $55,000+ on my car, I want to make sure I get the best value for money.
