Rim Size

Hi guys

I dont know if this has been covered yet but I am looking at a set of rims for my car.

Could you please tell me what is the widest rim size that will fit. Ive been looking at showwheels and they have an unreal rim with a huge dish on it that is 10" wide on the back and 8" wide on the front.

Any help would be great.

I think Brian has 19 x 10's in his car and he had to get the guards rolled.

This is an email I received back from Showwheels when I enquired about the 'Sleek' rim.

"We have fitted 19x8’s all round on these before with no problem! The 10 on the rear is maxing it out a little to far on the sedan I think, but if you supply me with a measurement to make the wheels to I would be happy to supply them. The 19x8 Sleek is $990ea and the 19x10 is $1040ea. Let me know if I can help with any other questions you may have."

that's a wide rim. What about the insurance???. Are you covered with a rim like that???

Progress Update: How Is BCL's Car Going?

Well I just got my new wheels fitted, 19 x 8.5 with 265/30/19 rubber for front and 19 x 9.5 with 275/30/19 for rear.

I'd say the fronts are maxed out for rim width, but the rears could go 285's or 295's on a 10" wide rim with 30 profile tyres.

I had both front and rear guards rolled before fitting the wheels.

Much care is required if you want a 10” rim.

Yes 10" on the rear will fit, as I have just fitted 10”…BUT

1. you need to be extremely careful to get the right offset

2. I had to roll my guards (not such a problem)

3. the major consideration is tyre selection. The Pirelli Corsa tyres that I’ve recently chosen and are now fitted are a genuine 285, and very fat. These were actually too wide for the previous 9.5” rim, and given the offset of the 9.5” previous rims there’s no way they would go on the car. The fact that I chose a 35 profile to bring the gearing back 5% made it sit higher and caused me (actually Simon at Nizpro) fitment challenges.

4. I need around 2 degrees negative camber also on the rear

5. I also had the added precaution of adjustable height suspension

6. you’ll find that many 275 tyres, if that’s what you go with, may not be wide enough on a 10” rim. For example, the Falken 451 275 tyres that I previously used I didn’t consider to be a genuine 275, and there’s no way I’d put them on a 10” rim. The Falken 451 275 tyres that I had previously were more like a genuine 245-255 when you look at the actual tread contact on the road.

I doubt very much that you’d fit a genuine 295 tyre on the rear. Perhaps something that is 295, yet not really genuine width…. But there is limited choice.

285 on 10” rim is probably the best option if you go with a 10” rim.

I did not want to have the guards pumped, which would spoil the look at the rear.

It depends what you’re after and how much you want to spend.

The best setup, with fewer dramas, is probably a 9.5” rear with something like a Michelin PS2, for excellent grip, and the conventional 275/30 profile to retain close to the original factory gearing (I.e close to original factory tyre diameter)

I needed extreme grip, but it was an extremely expensive solution… tyres alone $900 each!

Given the above, I can see why a 9.5” rim is the common and recommended solution, and the practical choice for most 275 tyres. You can go for much cheaper tyres, as I previously had, and as most people have.

To go wider than 10” is possible, but more modifications are required to the rear suspension.
