I need some technical assistance and phycological guidance here people!

I stayed at my in laws house in Goulburn last night, for a xmas party. Anyway,

Got in my ute this morning, all ready to drive down the winding, busy Clyde mountain to get to Batemans Bay for a few days, like most Canberrans, And she wouldnt start.

Couldnt hear my Walbro fuel pump prime up at all with the key turned on (which I normally here whirring in the back behind the passenger), so I called the NRMA. The guy checked the relays, and fuse, took the cap off the fuel tank and got me to wind it over, but there was nothing. :spoton:

So either the power into the fuel pump has stuffed up in the tank or on the top of the tank, or I've stuffed a 6 month old Fuel pump! Either way, I cant fix it without getting it to a workshop to put it on a hoist, and pull the tank out!!! So my ute is stuck in Goulburn till I can get someone open to fix it, prolly thursday.

So I got my sister in law to drive my Girlfriend and I back to Canberra (about 100km each way!), putting out from her holiday, and we packed all our gear into my girlfriends little 98 Excel, still keen for the coast.

Started travelling down, got about 20km out of Canberra, and the Excel shuts down at 90km an hour! Check engine light comes on, and without a whirr or splutter, engine dies and we roll to the side of the road! Never done it before, and We have owned it from new!

I checked the oil, coolant levels and temperatures, all are perfect, full tank of fuel leave the car there for a few minutes and bang, she starts up again! Drive another 10km and she does it again, no spluttering just a shutdown.

Get going again, thinking that bad things come in 3's but another few km down the road, she shuts off again! I waited a few minutes, got it going, drove another 4km or so to Bungendore (On the way to the coast, and where I work!) and have now called the NRMA to come and take a look. So here I am, sitting at my work computer dribbling on when I should have been at the coast hours ago!!!

The car is starting perfectly now, idles fine, no sign of any problem what so ever, but im just not sure what would be causing it to shut down at full speed? The only thing I can think of is theres something to do with an electrical system or throttle control heating up and dropping out? I have checked all fuses and relays and they are fine?

Im guessing that with all this trouble something in the universe was trying to tell me not to go to the coast today, so I might just try and get home sometime tonight and see what happens tomorrow.

Can anyone suggest anything that may help work out the problem? and get home?

Had the same thing on the dunnydore and it was the crank angle sensor failing everytime the engine got to normal operating temp - short term fix watering can of water over it to cool, until such time as it can be replaced. Best wishes mate - maybe Manuka Pool looks good right now?

Does the engine crank over?

The ute cranks over like a trooper, but when the key is turned on, the normal sound of the Walbro pump priming up is non existant, even with the fuel cap off.

Im pretty sure the power to the fuel pump has failed, as even the relay works properly.

Just finished with the NRMA guy on the Excel, he sprayed the throttle body with cleaner, and suggested to try and drive it back to Canberra tonight, and take it to The hyundai dealer tomorrow, as the dealer can use the scan tool to pick up what ever error the check engine light was throwing.

Check the power on top of the fuel tank with a multimeter and this will let you know whether it's a pump problem or a power problem before the pump itself. If there is no power present, don't bother taking your tank out, you will need to trace it before the pump. Hope that makes sense.

Ok - mate had same problem with a Hyundia Excel last year.

Something to do with a sensor up the front of the engine from memory.

Could be associated with cam timing. Its like a capacitor that goes haywire for awhile until it either cools down or disipates charge after ignition off. Start the car and charge builds up and shuts down engine - or vice versa. It's a safety thing but when the capacitor/resitor thingo starts to play-up, it shuts down the engine when it shouldn't

Sorry for the non technical explanation. Hope it helps

Unfortuneatly doing that in a ute isn't as easy as it is in a sedan.
