Brian,

I see here that most people are talking about installing a Ford T56. And the question of shift quality is being raised.

I'm sure you have driven a Ford T56 verus your Mal Wood T56. Is there any difference in the shift quality between the two transmissions?

No, actually I haven't driven the stock Ford T56.

According to Mal the box I'm running is a lot stronger than the standard Ford unit, which is a basic priority for me.

As for shift quality, for me the main issue is 2-3 and 4-5 shifts, which is why I'm trying the RIP shift.

I think the stock Ford box has double sychros to improve shift feel for normal use.

Awesome, but the diff?  Im not stirring but how is 1st now with the t56??  Do you feel any need to convert to the 3.73?

The 3.73 would be better in 1st & reverse which I'm looking into once I can raise a few $$. I'm not using it much at the moment so it can wait.

But at least I can stick the foot into it without worrying about damage.

:stirthepot:  $6,000 for the gearbox change!!

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yeh it sounds excessive but other than selling the ute with a noisey box & lossing near $4000 on the lease payout it was the only option.

The T5 was only rebuilt less than 1000km before it started singing at me in 1st 2nd & 3rd.

Costing goes as follows

T56 new; $5500 inc gst

Crossmember;$37 inc gst

Mount;$52 inc gst

Gearbox flange drive;$137 inc gst

Extreme Single plate Clutch;$450 inc gst

Labor;$100 +carton extra Dry :tease:

I got this reply form Ford Raceparts as I thought they could do a good price on the T56.

We don't keep the gearbox in stock, but we can get one from Ford Racing in the USA. It is not listed specifically for the XR6 Turbo, but it is a T56 used in the Mustangs. If you wanted more info on the gearbox, the part number is M-7003-F. Go to this link, www.fordracingparts.com and type in the part number as it is written and it will give you all the gear ratios and other specs. Cost of the unit is $4635 inc GST. Approx 6-8 weeks to get in from the USA.

Thanks

Troy

The only problem I see using the Mustang Box is were your gear stick comes through the floor it would be something to check before you go & order 1.The xr6t the selector looks to be further back than the Mustang box shown. Also with the Genuine item from ford Aust you get the Slave throwout bearing & plumbing worth aprox $400. If you were to go the mustang box avoid the stuffing around & ring Mal Wood as he has done the hard work to make them fit.

$6000 for an extra gear you'll hardly use? Spewin.

$5500 for 5 gears that work, 6th gear is just a bonus.

The T5 just doesn't handle any power upgrade so it was a T56 or I was going to get rid of my ute for good....

:Welcome2FordXR6t:

You can use either a T56 (B-series) or TR6060 (F-series) bellhousing as both fit both F and B series 6cyl engines (I'm not sure if the TR6060 bellhousing bolts to a T56, but I'm pressure sure it does...) . The difference on the outside of the gearbox is the shifter positioning. I don't think you'd be able to use a T56 easily in an FG, as the shifter would be in the wrong position and require custom fabrication to solve the problem. Get a TR6060 if you need a gearbox for an FG.
