Im wanting to fit a towbar to my car and have located one second hand including the wiring harness. I am just wondering if anyone has fitted one of these themselves. How hard is it to do? Can it be done with a basic set of tools, are there any traps to be wary of etc. etc.

yep bought a second hand one off the forum last week. Took an hour to fit. Remove the rear bumper using a spanner for the 4 bolts in the boot that hold it on. A screwdriver for the clips under each wheel arch. Pull the rear bumper off. Bolt up the tow bar and plug in the harness under the right tail light.

Bolt up the bumper again and tow your ski boat to the river for a good thrashing!! Roll on Summer

fitting towbars to most cars are easy if you have the instructions..

Well as a Haymen Reese distributor I can get you the fitting instructions for allmost any car,If you have a fax I can fax you the std or H/D fitting instructions or both if you want,

Im not very computer savy, so it would take me some time to work out how to scan and send it on this site (well im an old fart am only just learning how computers work)

Im in Cairns FNQ so I cant pop around and and show you unless you are in Bendigo Vic , I will be there next week to pick up my new work ute

Or give me a call with your fax number 0740414747

Ashley

oops just saw that you are in Brisbane :spoton:

Thanks everyone for your information I pick up my towbar this afternoon and some work for me to do tommorrow.

Mercurysteve I am paying $140.00 for mine second hand with the wiring loom. A new one fitted is $260 assuming yours is the standard 1600kg rated towbar.

I will be ripping mine out for the new beast, its good to hear there is no wire splicing or soldering to do.

ITs been 15years since my last towbar install and Ford want to charge me $160 to swap it over.

Had an aftermarket 1600kg towbar fitted for around $200.

I decided not to put the Ford towbar on as I didn't like the look of the gap left in the bumper with the 1600kg towbar. When the neck is removed.

When the neck is removed for my towbar the bumper cover plate inserts back into the bumper giving the no towbar smooth look.

As a casual user of a towbar I take it off when not in use, and insert the cover. Unlike the people who leave them on as a parking aid, rear mini bullbar and shin breaker. Now there's a thought do those people also have their fog lights on all the time??

Mate do not knock someone for leaving their towbar on.

It certainly saved me! I'm never taking it off again!
