The hotter the engine gets, the less power is allowed by the PCM.I have also been lead to believe that the Typhoon has a different deg thermostat!A freind has a MKI and I have a MKII both auto's. His runs around 1/4 on temp gauge, where mine runs a mic hair under half. (On the same road, at the same time, same ambient temp ect)Can anyone shead some light on this? I feel it makes a big difference to power. the car pulls harder running cooler and stays cooler when your really giving it a hard time Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/21990-engine-temp-vs-performance/#findComment-325389 Share on other sites

I dont think the bigger coolerin the front would have helped much. Thermostat was changed to run cooler. After a few short sprints, both water and oil temps rise.. water temp just below half, and oil temp up to about 90 deg C.Fan is operating at full speed, and temps come back to 80 degC quite quickly. As to ECU monitoring engine temp for performance ??? Don't know.Certainly the charge air temp drawn into manifold IS monitored and definitely affects performance. By same token, higher under bonnet temps will heat up the entire intake system, including radiated heat from radiator heating intercooler core, resulting in higher air intake temps and therefore drop in performance. The cooler the engine bay is, therefore the better the performance.A mod to incorporate to the "T" is reducing temps under the bonnet. Especially needed if circuit racing. As you increase power, there is a BIG increase in temps under the bonnet. I've heard of a simple technique... to remove the rubber seal across the front and rear edges of the bonnet. This will allow air to flow over the top of the engine ridding the area of heat .Not sure how effective this is, and the effect on aerodynamics.HAS anyone done this?Of course a much better option is to incorporate some stylish, effective and aerodynamic vents.... A few guys have modified bonnets... Any feedback?Or maybe some side vents on the trailing side of the front guards might look OK?Where's the photo-shop stylists..... where's the Ausie equivalent of Chip Foose?tom Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/21990-engine-temp-vs-performance/#findComment-325409 Share on other sites

rob82 Member 65 Member For: 19y 5m 10d Posted 18/12/05 08:35 AM Share Posted 18/12/05 08:35 AM Yes the PCM will remove performance when the engine is running hotter. It does this by removing boost and timing and increasing AFR's. If you've seen the factory desired boost table you would see as the MCT(mass charge temp) gets to a certain level the desired boost is almost halved hence reducing power. As for removing the bonnet seals it will have absolutely no efect on areodynamics whats so ever, after all it's only a falcon but yes it will remove under bonnet heat. These motors are extremely heat dependant and while you can get away without upgrading the IC for a stage 1 upgrade stage two would allmost be a definate in my books. In one dyno ramp you can see the CHT increase by up to 10 deg Celcius.
