Posted 20/12/05 01:32 AM Share Posted 20/12/05 01:32 AM Gungahlin isn't a great area, I live there so I can tell you all about it.About a billion new homes being crammed onto itty bitty blocks, and the shopping centre schmozzle is beyond belief.Might be ok in 10years when some tree's have grown, but I fully expect the area to be full of centrelink mum's and bawling kidlings. After all, they don't have a full Centrelink office here, just the family payments one.Honestly, rent somewhere for 12 months, drive around a lot, visit a lot of areas and get a feel for what you want.Gungahlin and Tuggernong both have excellent roads that link them to town, so essentially there isn't anywhere really in the ACT that is more than 20mins or so away, but not at peak hour. Not much of a peak hour massacre like Sydney but it does have one that slows everything down.Best of luck to you!<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Yeah, I've moved around a bit, Gungahlin wasn't all it was cracked up to be (Went into Belco for most things anyway) I'm living down south in Lanyon (Tuggernong)right now (aka north cooma) and even during peak hour it at most only takes me half an hour to get into the City, even less if I get a good run in (aka those in the right lane are doing at least the speed limit so you can overtake the slower cars)Just one pointer, if you do go for a place that is further out don't rely on public transport to get you anywhere... The bus from our place takes nearly an hour to get into the city after it takes the senic route around lanyon... But in and around Woden is pretty good (expensive to buy a place in though but is the dead centre of Canberra), and besides after seen the cost of all-day parking in both Sydney and Melbourne, Canberra really has nothing to complain about...But as suggested rent a place (From what I have seen Curtin seems to be the entry point for most people moving to Canberra, rents are not to expensive, and it is very central \ taxies to and from the City are still reasonabily priced etc...) and get a bit of an idea on which suburbs would suit you best... I'm a bit biased but agree with harvyk's sentiments on Curtin - we had our first house there and just loved the area. Very central location without the ridiculous prices of the so-called "inner south".We've lived in numerous locations both north and south side, over a period of 11 years. I won't say any more, but the only two houses we've actually bought (ie. not renting) have been on the south side - we're currently in Narrabundah. The Southside is such a safe place...http://canberra.yourguide.com.auPolice name dead man found on ovalThe body found lying on a Canberra oval this week has been identified as 30-year-old Kambah man Matthew Lewis. Mr Lewis's body was found on Kambah Oval No3 by a person walking a dog at about 6am on Monday. Police are treating the Kambah man's death as suspicious after finding injuries on his body, but would not say whether it was a homicide until after a post-mortem, to be carried out later today. Posted 21/12/05 10:40 AM Share Posted 21/12/05 10:40 AM enough Ross, if you want to stray off topic, there is a thread for that...lets remember we aren't here to b**ch and whine, we're here to help someone and share with them information about this great town of ours.Lets post some positive contributions instead of negative. As has been said by a few people now, it is best for people new to the ACT to get their own feel for a place. Let us welcome an XR6T member to our home turf and invite him on the next dinner. I believe Gary is holding one on the 30th, and if you can't make it to that one, I'm sure there will be more.Be sure to come and say g'day

Close to the South Coast, kinda close to Sydney, closer to Melb than Sydney, and our airport is a cracker here, can fly anywhere. The only downside is there really isnt a great deal to do once youve done everything. Telstra tower is cool, Tidbinbilla rocks, Museum is ok, but once youve done that, that's about it. I do like visiting Sydney, cause there is always something to do.
