My understandig is that when you flash the stock tune back in you can then flash any other car, it will only be vin locked to a car as long as that car has the edit flashed in.

Happy to be corrected if Im wrong

BAturb and xrturb, you guys aren't quite correct. Have a look at this post of mine where I've tried to explain it all.

In short, the first time Edit is used, it downloads your factory map and VIN locks itself to that vehicle. This is the only time it downloads your factory map (so, for example, if you get a flash upgrade from Ford and then reload a custom tune, you'll lose that upgrade 'cos the next time you reload the factory map, it'll be your original one).

Even with the factory map loaded back in, you will NOT be able to use the box on another car until it has been reset. And ColinT is also correct - you cannot reset the box unless the factory map has been reloaded first.

A quote from CAPA'S pamplet says that you can transfer the edit to the next car when the owner updates their car. Of cause you have to download the CAPA edit back to the box before you can do this.

I thought you can do this up to 5 times (5 cars) before it has to be reset. Accually I am almost certain.

Cheers

Well, yeah, it depends on our definition of 'reset' I guess - maybe I should have said 'unlocked'? :crybaby:

When you transfer it to another car (doesn't matter whether you are the same owner or someone else), the box has to be unlocked by CAPA or a qualified tuner. And you're right, you can do this up to 5 times (the 5 'lives' people keep referring about). Once this has been done 5 times, then it has to be sent back to SCT in the USA to be reset. Does that make more sense now?

Bugster is right

I just called CAPA and they said that the tuner must unlock the box for the new car.

thinking about buying a s/hand capa flash.

if I purchase this, does this mean that I will only be able to use it if the previous owner has uploaded the stock tune?

thanks!

For a tuner to reset the box, this is the case. If the car has not been restored back to factory tune, the box has to be sent back to Capa for a reset, to my understanding they are real hesitant on doing this, so might be wise to check with capa before making a purchase :bum:
