Listen under the bonnet whilst idling, get someone to rev it up. See if the noise is there whislt stationary and revving. If it is, it's not pinging. 'Tapping' doesn't sound like pinging. Pinging sounds like someone throwing a hammer around under the bonnet, or marbles, and the noise is never consistant. How much boost is it running? Safe afr's mean nothing. 25psi on safe afr's will blow an engine. Cylinder pressure is very dangerous.Cars will make roughly the same power (sometimes they make more..) with less boost and more timing than they do with more boost and less timing.
