Hey...

Just seeing if anyone else has had a problem with their T5's...

My car has covered 41,000k's with full service history. When driving it won't make the 5th/3rd down change, it is like there is a 'blockage' not allowing it to go in to 3rd. If you go from 5th to 4th but don't engage 4th then complete the change in to 3rd it goes in fine... what's wrong with my tranmission? :gooff:

Other than SS Inductions cold air intake and K&N air filter there is nothing else done to the car mechanically... will these modified parts affect my chance of a warranty claim if needed? I don't do burnouts or drive a P-Plater with a drift car in my T... when I bought my wheels the other week they even asked me if I wanted to go and have some fun with my old tyres before I put the new ones on and said no...

I am going to head to my local ford dealer (Knox Ford) this morning and see if I can book it in to have them look at it... but just wanted some prior knowledge before I head down there... surely 41k is too low a km reading to have a stock transmission fail on a mechanically stock car????

Edit- It has also 'crunched' in to 5th a few times no other gears just 5th... I didn't expect this from a synchro tranmission... maybe my 8 tonne truck at work but not my 'new' car...

Cheers for any replies...

my T5 had the same issue with the 5th to 3rd change... ford say this is normal...

the crunching into 5th is a warrantable item... take it to ford and they will fix it for you :spoton:

Normal? That's not normal on any manual car or truck I have ever driven... Am heading down now to the dealer and will report back when I get back as to what they say...

I have to book it in which I have now done... Monday 12th December, the first day of my week off before christmas will now be spent without my car... I can't see the Service Manager today either as he is not in, which I am a bit disappointed about as I would like to speak to someone face to face about it first. And just like a miracle... the crunching in to 5th though seldom as it was has now stopped altogether. Who would've thought?!? Isn't it always the way? As soon as you need to show someone that something doesn't work it then works perfectly as if the problem was never there in the first place...

Apparently it is normal, Ford will either waste your time to book the car in and then say its normal or they will tell you straight up that it's....NORMAL.

Just depress the clutch and go 5th-4th-3rd and then release the clutch and it will be fine.

Apparently it is a safety feature to stop you going 5th-1st.

ANY mods to your car will make Ford look a bit closer, if you are worried I would not have any mods.

The 5th gear crunch is a known problem with the T5 and may require a rebuild...if you can make it happen with a ford person in the car.

Mine had a problem with 5th gear also. Ford replaced the synchro in 5th gear for me under warranty, but was told it was due to the floor mats not letting the clutch to be pressed in all the way....WTF.

But they did fix the problem and has been ok since then.

Cheers

Cheers boys...

Annoyed that it is considered a 'safety' feature :fool: So the diff clunk and the 5th/3rd combo come as FoMoCo no cost features... brilliant :fool:

I'll speak to the Service Manager when I get a chance and see if it really needs booked in or not...

Thanks for the quick replies

Diff clunk was a NCO when you opted for the Manual.

Mine did it driving out if the dealer driveway when it was brand new.

You can drive around the problem, but it does SUCK.

My next will be an auto.

How long have you owned the car? I'd have thought that by the time you'd done 40,000km you'd have the gearbox well and truely sussed. Most of the late model T5 gearboxes have the lockout from fifth to third. Earlier ones didn't do it. You can work around it in any of these three ways - one, slip the lever into fourth and then third but without engaging the clutch in fourth as you do so - two, when you slip out of fifth you can move the lever to the far left of the neutral gate and then bring it back across to line up with third, or three, and the best one, you need to learn the correct driving procedure for manual gearboxes and it won't be a problem for you ... ie. change each gear in numerical order, up or down, and don't skip gears.

The crunch into fifth is due to worn out syncros - they are very soft on fifth gear and the problem is caused by too rapid gear changes into fifth - slowing down the change will help ease the problem. It's a pity Ford don't recommend this but I guess if they did they would just be admitting that the gearbox is not what it should be eh. However, it is a warranty item usually. Ask for steel syncro rings to be fitted in place of the brass ones if you can get your dealer to fix it for you.
