grab a tripod mate - will make a huge difference - alternatively, find something that is rock solid you can rest the camera against like a wall... see how that goes...

I dug through my digital archives to find this... it was taken on a 2.1Mpix Canon S10... no grain... plenty of detail and not dark... 2 second exposure according to the EXIF data on the file... no flash. ...just a tripod...post-4291-1132293772_thumb.jpg

If you plan to print these images at a photo lab (super easy these days) be advised that anything under 6.0Mp will leave you with grainy prints, every time. I can't tell you exactly why that is, but with my 3.2 Minolta this happened quite a bit, even on the highest resolution. I had this confirmed by the camera tech guy when I got my new one.

Oldraven....don't take this too personally...but your comment on anything less than 6.0MP....in my humble opinion, is ABSOLUTE CRAP

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Have to agree Gaza, my 4 meg cannon S45 has never produced grainy images

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Well, we're all entitled to our opinions. ;)

I didn't say the images were grainy. But have you ever gotten prints made with a lower resolution image? I don't know what to tell you guys. I have personally had this happen. The images look crisp and perfect on my computer, but the prints were drastically different between the two cameras. 3.2 vs. 8.2. Again, this is just my experience.

I want to upgrade digital cameras from my old 2.1mp Polaroid sh*tbox...

got a brochure today and they have a Kodak Z700 for $199.

details here: http://www.digitalcams.com.au/ProductDetai...tem_id=3KOD0701

would this be a good camera for taking to car shows and stuff like that? im not after the best camera in the world.. just a good everyday camera that does great shots at day AND night as my current digicam SUCKS at night time stuff and doesnt give good background detail such as branches and leaves on tree's in the back of the shots.

whatchu think?

ive printed A3 with a 3.2mp Canon and it was fine, sure it wont win any awards but for around the house/office whatever they look fine !!

if you only wanna spend around 200 what about the canon A410?? ive never had probs with Canon

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Gotta agree with you Nang! I aint no expert, but from my experience I always recommend Canon entry level cameras to people wanting a good point and shoot, and they always feed back that people with more expensive cameras can't believe the picture quality.

I have a IXUS v3 3.2 point and shoot camera and it does a great job for the task. I recently got a 6.2mp Nikon D70s digital SLR and the difference in the pictures is amazing.

I can blow the pics up to 4m x 6m if I wanted as the resolution is incredible.

I took a portriat of my son and could zoom in to see the pours on his skin. If I wanted I could crop a pour and then enlarge it again.

As people have mentioned the LENSE makes all the difference.

Steve's webcam site mentioned above is absolutately fantastic when it comes to camera reviews. Very comprehensive and through. But beware, because it's US orientated, some camera models released there are not available here and some models here are remaned something else over there (but that soon becomes quickly evident after you see the pics and specs) are not even available over there and may not be reviewed.

Trough Lolly, have a look at Digital Camera Warehouse in Sydney. I've bought from them over the Net and they delivered fast. I even got to speak with a human at the end of their support line (no funny duddy email only support...)

http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/index.htm

I have not bought a camera from them, just accessories so far - but from my recent search for a digital camera as a gift for my sister, I found them a pretty good bench mark for the lower end prices for particular models. The killer is the delivery cost when you're shopping for the cheapest price of a particular model. I've found that when Myer MegaMart have a sale, they can be the cheapest (probably because they have volume buying power and occassionally land a good deal from an overstocked supplier?).

Another good place for the cheapest price in a particular model (once you've decided) is Computers and Parts Land in Nottinghill and West Melbourne. My mate bought an Canon IXUS 50 there for AUD$450 when the going price for them was about AUD$500 about 4 months ago. He then got another AUD$45 off as he was going overseas and could claim it as duty-free at the airport!!! They're at

....but Raven....you mentioned you had a problem printing images taken from a 3.2MP camera, and then went on to say anything less than 6.0MP would be useless for printing. (Your most recent comment compared 3.2 v 8.2)That's a hell of a leap you just made.

From personal experience, I've had both 4MP cameras and 5MP cameras. Both have resulted in great prints from both home inkjet printer and camera development outlets. To suggest that anyone should ignore cameras with less than 6.0MP, because of inability to produce quality prints...is totally wrong.

This is not opinion....this is fact.

I'd hate to see anyone outlay more than they need to.....or more than they can afford.

The camera you should buy depends on the end product, if all you are going to do is look at the images on the computer or on the odd occasion print out a 6x4 or a 10x8 from the local lab then a three or four Meg camera is more than adequate. If you are going to do more high end stuff like display prints or large poster size prints then I would start looking at digital SLRs

A good photo comes down to three things experiance, knowleage and then equipment . Before lashing out on a multi grand camera the best thing is to do a tafe course on the subject. the Knowleage gained will help you make the choice easer and to better understand and use the camera you do buy.
