Hey everybody,

I just joined the site. I've been trying to find out some information on the Barra 240t. I know I like the sound of it, and would like to bring one to Canada to swap into my TurboCoupe.

Don't get me wrong, I love the 2.3 Turbo. It's a screamer, and the torque deffinately gets the blood boiling, but it's just not enough anymore. I got to ride in an '03 Cobra (Mustang w/4.6L DOHC SC V8) recently, and came to the realisation that four pots just don't have enough rotating mass. With the new rubber I have to drop the hammer at above 4k to break loose. 190hp (142kw) and 240lb/ft (325nm) was a lot in 1986, but not 19 years later.

Anyway, when the car hits classic status (2011), I'd like to make a complete street/strip car out of it. Something unique, and I can't think of any other Barra 240T powered TurboCoupe Thunderbirds, let alone Fords in North America. Since 9 times out of ten, a 302 (5.0L) is swapped into TC's, I thought I'd at least keep it inline and boosted.

So, are these engines hard to come by? As in, do you hear of many wrecked XR6's? I know I can't import an XR6 (too many doors anyway), but the engine should be fine, as long as I can best local smog laws. How much would a used Barra 240T cost? Or if you can just help me find an Australian parts dealer/wrecker, I'd really appreciate it.

No takers?

How about another question.

I'm assuming Ba 240t is the specific engine code. (correct me if I'm wrong, I'm as new to Au Fords as you can get) Could anyone tell me part #'s for other driveline parts? Tranny, Rear, Axles, Driveshaft, etc.

I also need to know what kind of dimensions I'm looking at here. The space I have underhood is cavernous, so I don't think I'll have a hard time making it all fit up front. The six speed on the other hand may be a bit bigger than the Borg Warner T5. Driveshaft length isn't an issue. I'd likely just fab it to a Fox IV (-04 Mustang Cobra or Mach 1) IRS, which will bolt onto my Fox chassis already with minor mods.

I just wish Ford would take GM's lead and import this chassis, and make a 2-dr body as the new T-bird. This Retro-bird is a joke, but a Falcon based Thunderbird would set everything right again.

Thanks, man. And I was just trying to figure out what time it was on the other end of the world. :msm:

It's getting near time to leave work here, so I'll check this out in the morning, or later tonight, and see if there are any answers/flames/newb embarrassment, etc.

Welcome Oldraven,

here's a couple of sites to get you started.

www.fordwreckers.com.au or email sales@fordwreckers.com.au

www.aussiewreck.com

www.tradingpost.com.au

There are a few members that work at ford dealers who may also be able to help, hopefully they will see your post (I can't remember which ones).

Cheers,

Steve.

The 240T motor is quite cheap, going for about US$6500 for a new long motor from the factory.

I do not have info on the phyical dimentions of the motor, but they are long and tall for a straight 6.

You could not go wrong with this type of configuration as there are now several 1000+hp motors being build with very few mods.

Good luck with your project, it sounds like a good combination

Ahh, the old turbocoupe..the fond memories. I had an 85 and an 87 and loved them both (I originally settled on the 85 because I couldn't get an 84 SVT Mustang cheaply). I reckon it'd be quite amazing to see this engine fitted in. These XR6T's are far more fun to drive than my 97 Contour SVT.

Good luck on your search and keep us updated! :)

Hi oldraven,

just a couple of things:

There is some advantage in going for a new or a BA (niow just superceeded) Typhoon which had the 270kW version of the motor as both have dual VCT.

Otherwise no issue.

If you are after a manual box - the T56 is the go - The T5 was fitted in the mark 1, but replaced in the mark 2 and new BF with the T56.

Mal Wood's who are a site sponser convert a 'mustang' T56 for use in the falcon, and I would expect this to be a cheaper option than importing agbox as well.

If you are looking to make more than 330ish rwkw (440rwhp) then you will need to rebuild the engine, or have it build prior to shipping.

bcl on this forum did have a stage 3 motor for same some time back - not sure what happened with this - might be worth speaking to him.

Good luck with this project!

Cheers,

Ben.

Hopefully Ford america will see how awesome the Barra 240T is and use it themselves, making it a sinch to get hold of one.

Dazza.

That sounds like a great project oldraven, I'd be interested to hear how you go. gogo's point about the Typhoon motor is a good one, but it may cost a lot more to buy from the factory? As you've probably already seen on the forum, the flash tuner (Edit) is a good, cheap way of extracting a lot more out of the engine if that's what you want to do. Hell, it's even US (SCT) based software!! :spoton:

Oh, and
