Hi Guys,

just finished reading a thread in which the old 1/4 mile chestnut of " a properly driven manual will always be quicker than an auto " was raised.

I know that this has been debated before, but I have never really seen a definitive outcome. ( pls advise if it has )

I take my limited experience at the drags as an example. I have an auto T with an airbox mod and have run a 13.6 ( best ) but 13.8`s consistently. Are there any manuals out there that have run these times or quicker, with the same mods ?

I am assuming that we will all compare time slips so the roll out factor is taken into consideration.

time is in the sig..

from what I've seen the auto seems to be quicker..

as recent examples go - flukeyluke 12.55@257rwkw, F6UTE 12.80@~300rwkw..

im pretty sure this topic has been done before too..

It is true that a manual will beat a auto in a drag, BUT it is all up to the launch. Because the T's are heavy, to get the beast of the line without wheelspin requires a lot of clutch slippage and this takes a lot of practice. The Auto drivers can just stick it in drive and boot it.

The shock load when the clutch is engaged will also promote wheelspin. The reason the Manual is technically quicker is because there is less drivetrain loss and you also have extra gears to use.

In a real world a auto will beat the manual as they can be launched more consistantly, but throw them both on a real racetrack and the result is the opposite.

Auto is quicker then a manual.

If it was a slider clutch air shifted maybe... But there is no way no matter who u are you will make a manual car with a normal clutch run as fast as a auto.

From what Ive read in Motor over the years the 5spd BA put down a 14.1. The 4spd auto was mentioned as producing 14.2. Wheels magazine, who drive with 2 ppl in the car, got a 14.3 quarter.

From what Ive seen at WSID once you start modding the T the autos put themselves ahead of the manuals due to launch consistency and gearchange speed.

Now the BF 6spd auto will have quicker changes and better gearing so Id expect it to pump things up even nicelier. :blink:
