The 'possible' Future Of Modifications. Ver 1.1

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Got a quick question, with a no doubt an answer that will make no real sense to most of us, but will to those on the forum that are versed in Microsoft Windows and software programming, or as an alternative 'know of' a small, but capable, software development company.

Currently most of us that have a home PC or alaptop are running a Windows Operating System, be it NT or XP Home/Professional.

Similarly Pocket PC or PDA's with phone capabilities will be have a version of Windows called 'MOBILE' and the lastest variant is 'version 5.0'

I want to know how:

Is it possible to run an a Windows based program (PC/Laptop) with alterations in its programming and source codes so it will be compatible and capable of being installed onto Windows Mobile (PPC/PDA) so long as it meets the processing speed and storage requirements.

(see told you it was going to be a quick question :spoton: )

I've got a few ideas, but won't let cat out of the bag yet, that could prove to be 'unequivically boundless :spoton:' for those who are, who have and who think about, modifying their cars!

Appreciate all feedback, IT guru or not.

Thanks Darren.

In short, no.

You can't even run PPC programs on a PC, because the PC can't emulate the ARM processor that the PPC's have..

Hope this helps.

Yes

It's a question related to virtual machine (VM) ware.

Get the code to sit on top of a VM later that looks like a native device to the software but is written to a specific hardware platform - I.e. - a virtual machiine!

Tha's the short answer, the work to do it a little more challenging - just ask the dudes that ported MS software to run under CE.

Or SAP when they took R2 (OS390) to R3 (open systems - UNIX/OS400 etc...) - ask them how hard it was to get BASIS etc... correct.

Have fun

that's correct. PC software has to be re-developed for Pocket PC (e.g. Windows Mobile 2003, etc) as it has a different type of processor. We are currently doing something very similar at work where we have developed a PPC version of one of our popular software.

I have not used Windows Mobile 5.0 as yet. I believe it is slightly superior to the current one Windows Mobile 2003 2nd Edition with better support for graphics and a bit more enhancements including Pocket Excel and more

I wonder why Intel do not make processors for PPC's as they could then run full blown XP.

Seeme there has been an Emulator released recently.

Downside is processor usage. Guys are complaining about how slow running GPS software on a 2.8 P4 is ( carputers ). taking 30 secs to re-route etc, when on my PDA, it's instant.

There is a download from Microsoft, it's free.

I d/loaded a remote screen for my PDA. This means I can use my PDA from my desktop when connected via active sync. Just using the mouse to navigate the screen. The PDA even has 'touch beeps' when a 'button' is pressed..

nice..
