Adam,

Thanks for the qualification. Not being a Drag racing expert I certainly appreciate the polite way that you informed me of the difference between sedans and utes in the way that run.

Respect is a 2 way street that needs to be earned.

Regards

M G

now in my humble opinion.....

The use of a Nizpro's concept of feeding the air directly to a plenum without crossing over the motor, AND the use of APS exhaust and IC AND the EDIT would make for the ideal combo of parts available from Ausie suppliers.

That, in conjunction with a good tuner, of course.

Tom - could not agree more - my car goes to Nizpro tomorrow - I will be fitting their IC with all plumbing and plenum - retaining the APS exhaust, valve springs and injectors - possibly add a fuel pump dependant on how we go. My T56 and mal woods option 3 clutch are going in at the same time. This should place the reliability limitation on the engine internals, which I have no intention of upgrading in the forseeable future.

Key goal for me in this is lower lag - hopefully through lower boost through more efficient piping, and more instant delivery of boost to the plenum through lower volume in said plumbing, which should result in more instant, stronger and hopefully more progressive response at all revs and throttle positions!

Good thread!!! Lots of informative responses - well done guys!

Cheers,

Ben.

From a starting point if I was to purchase a new car today and start the mod path I would look into the Edit as it is another way to a means, however the level of quality I have seen from the APS equipment coupled with the sheer excellent support and service I get from Autotech/Spiro would mean that I would prefer to have him as my Tuner over the possible gains that an Edit may give.

No doubt M G - tuner is the key!

Hi Martin,

Could you tell me how this is done, I was of the impression that the knock sensors were not "turned on" in the edit in its current v2.9 state, I am happy to be corrected if you could tell me how to do it.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

It would seem as though you are being fed misinformation here Eugene.

Advantage 2.9 is an EXE file, a command program that opens the database which contains the factory calibrations and all of their control parameters. Whether a tuner uses Advantage 2.8 or 2.9 is not going to affect their functionality to any significant degree.

From the very first Australian database (August 2004) the two primary knock sensor control tables (one for fast attack or burst knock, and one for slow correction) have been in there and working, just as they do on a standard car. After all we use the dead stock factory Ford program as the base.....Makes sense right?

Now if a tuner adds so much spark into the main timing map that the engine still pings with all of the knock control instigated (I.e. both fast attack and slow correction at maximum which will take out around 12 degrees of timing) then the engine will still ping regardless. Understand? The art of tuning is to keep the ignition timing away from the need for knock sensors, and then let the system utilise them in the case of an unexpected detonation event to do exactly what they are supposed to do - protect the engine.

Some engines make enough mechanical noise from the factory that the knock sensors can be active the whole time even in stock form, which would convince those less than switched on that they may not indeed work. By simply interrogating the OBD II data port on the XR6T with a decent scanner or the new CAPA data logger it is possible to monitor this knock correction in real time, and take the appropriate steps (recalibrate the knock gain tables).

Indeed the latest version of the Australian database which has been available to CAPA Flash Tuners for over a month now gives the tuner access to a host of different knock control tables including individual cylinder sensitivity to allow fine tuning of the knock system for forged piston/big cam applications where there is a pile of mechanical noise, and still have perfect control.

Hi Martin

I am unable to use my Capa Flash Tuner on the 10psi selection because of bad pinging (mainly on gear changes) and I always use Ultimate fuel. Does this mean there is something wrong with the tune or the box?

Some guys can't run the 10 psi tune. Try octane booster??

Remember, it's a 'generic' tune. One size fits all - And we know how well they fit.

If the knock sensors were enabled then there would be no ping :gooff: Is this correct Martin

Its not like the car senses pinging and then retunes itself, it sensors knock removes x amount (depending on tuner) and then its back again.. it doesnt keep the timing out. SO if the tunes wrong you will hear the car as will the knock sensor feel the ping.

Sadly we are still not finished - exhausted yes but not finished. I am just about about to head off the work and drop my car off with Nick for one final effort. Currently cannot get within 30RWKW of what it had with Phase II but the bottom end application of torque is definitely firmer and so is the pinging. Nick spent hours yesterday trying to get power without pinging but I fear I am about to become dingah the pingah!Llots more to follow but currently not a happy camper!

Sorry Nick, this last post was Dingah's and not Nick's. I let him use my home computer yesterday to check his pile of PMs and didn't realise it was still logged on with his signature etc.
