that's how I understood it to work, the tuner can put in too much timing and the knock sensors/adjustment, just cant keep up.

does the current snap-on scan tool have the ability to look at live data, say knock sensors, when driving, a friend in singleton has one but I havn't used one for a while.

From what I can see fuel is the biggest issue in causing Ping with these things, 98=no drama's, 95= some ping on hi load high gear, 91 is useless, ping city.

Not sure if Dingah accesses the forum much from work? If I may speak on his behalf, my understanding is that he is now running Edit alone to see if he can better what the APS Phase II set up was giving him. He and Nick discovered that there was one major problem with trying to run Unichip and Edit in conjunction. That is, with Unichip still installed, it (and not Edit) was in control of boost. That meant that if you wanted, say, 15psi of boost on your 'wild' map, then your 'mild' (or even valet!!) map would also have to run 15psi of boost!! :sleepystuff::spit:

So that pretty much rendered the Edit's ability to store three different maps somewhat useless. With that in mind, they decided to take out the Unichip and give Edit a go by itself.

Good luck today guys, hope you find an outcome that everyone's happy with. And thanks again for all the time you spent getting my car just right Nick, I was very impressed by your dedication to perfection and it was a pleasure finally getting to meet you in person mate. Yeah, good mate, thanks for asking. Unfortunately family commitments have meant I haven't really had a chance to test it properly yet, but from the little (sedate surburban) driving I've done so far it feels great. Feels stronger than before and better throttle response. The shifts are definitely firmer, but probably actually feel better than stock - it's certainly nowhere near what I'd call harsh. In fact, although my wife has commented on the throttle response, she hasn't even picked up on the shifts! :sleepystuff:

I'll post a full report after I've had a chance to take the car out for a decent run, but that may not be until after this weekend. :sleepystuff:

Well, so far so good anyway! The guys at DTS were so damn busy they didn't have time to print out dyno graphs at the time. I was supposed to get them last night at dinner but again they'd been working late and came straight over, so no graphs yet. :sleepystuff:

I'll try to pop in later this week and pick them up. Don't worry, I'll post 'em up when I do get them, but bear in mind that being an otherwise stock car my power levels are hardly impressive compared to what many other members are getting! :sleepystuff:

Mate I wouldn't be focussing on what the ultimate power reading is as this can very greatly from dyno to dyno. From my own experience I can get up to an extra 30rwkw just by taking it down the rd to a less conservative dyno.

It's all about the "shape of the curves" and that goes for dyno readings as well :blush:

Couldn't agree more mate! Yeah, the DTS dyno reads a lot lower than other dynos around here I gather - my stock map put out 188rwkw vs 200rwkw on another (Dyno Dynamics) dyno. But yes, I couldn't give a rats about what the actual final figure is as long as the power I'm getting is an appreciable gain over stock (obviously!), delivered nice and progressively from low down in the rev range, the car retains a basically stock feel to drive, and the AFRs are well within safe limits. :blush:

Thanks guys for the pointer on Unichip possibly interfering with the set up causing the car to have its PCM wiped. Checked with Nick this morning who was admant that the Unichip was out of the equation at that time. Furthermore, without doing anything to my car’s configuration when it eventually returned from the dealership, a different CAPA box loaded perfectly indicating some defecting hardware, firmware or software in the original box.

As a side note I was fearful of a black smoke run back to Nick after the PCM was sorted at the dealership and actually the car ran quite well with the Ford flash and larger (APS Phase II grey bodied) injectors fitted.

Still we have moved on and have the F, P1 and trial P2 maps in the car providing 180’ish, 230 and 240RWKW respectively. As those who have experienced Wog tunes before will know that a 240RWKW tune from Nick feels considerably stronger than a ‘conventional’ tune profile – just ask what remains of my tyres and transmission! My arse dyno tells me that the 260’ish RWKW trial P3 map felt waaaay stronger than the Phase II 280RWKW and it’s the first time I have been at 45 degrees off course at 80kph on a 2-3 change with my hands on the wheel. Nick asked me whether I could hear any pinging to which I replied there was only a finite blood supply in my body and my eyes were that wide open I had no hearing left!

We worked through till 8:00pm last night and although Nick wanted to go on we aborted any further effort with my P3 map which then pinged, detonated and rattled under load which was bloody disappointing for all the investment of Nick’s time, my time, Glen’s time, the costs of towing the car to the dealership, the cost of dyno time, the CAPA box, another tank of Ultimate….(the previous tank was Vortex 98) Christ the list of expenditures just seemed endless.

We all recognised that Nick was really trying his best within the capabilities of the Edit software – last night at dinner some wag observed that it should be re-named crystal ball software or maybe a combination of tarot cars, astrological charts and liars dice might produce more predictable outcomes. There was one amusing episode where my car sounded more like a 747 on lift off when on the Dyno. I turned around to see Glen sitting in the car with an astonished WTF look and I as advised that now the Edit had taken over the boost control it had elected to give 24psi boost rather than the 14 requested!! At least all the hoses and clips were still intact!

I left dinner last night quite down but hoping that Nick would be able to achieve a noticeable and driveable outcome this morning in the time remaining. Not long ago I received a call from “Nick ..hey how ya going Dynowog” and after another three hours of effort he told me that all was now sweet and the P3 is rocket ship material and he was also happy and the P2 which has evidently tested really well too. So although I have yet to drive these maps myself I am feeling a lot more optimistic now.

For those of you out there considering purchasing Edit on a plug and play basis, I recommend a serious re-think of your strategy. Nick reckons of nearly 150 tunes he has only had two that ran fully sweet with no additional tuning mods being required. The moral of that story is get someone who knows this business and get it on a dyno.

Buggy’s synopsis of the Unichip and Edit is just about spot-on, whatever boost was going to be mapped into Unichip for the Edit programming would have to remain unchanged for all three maps – thus I could see little benefit in having three maps all with 15pounds – some valet tune that would have been!

Let me take this opportunity to say publicly whatever the outcomes achieved, Nick and Glen the pair of you have shown legendary patience and professionalism throughout. I will long recall the sight of Nick sitting though dinner frowning, completely locked into the previous day’s happenings and trying to think of solutions to dingah the pingah issue and needing to be reminded to actually eat something.

I hope that all of these lessons and others will translate easily into Spoony’s car as the lad has been so patient whilst listening to all of these dramas being replayed. We look forward to hearing a good outcome there. I am now considering sneaking round to Buggy’s home and showing his wife how to re-flash his car so that she have more fun too!
