Mate, I wish I had a T. Just bought property and theres not much left for even a second hand T. I will hopefully be getting one eventually.

I agree with you about getting someone up here to do custom edits though. The XR6T scene hasnt really developed up here and I really think it should! I have a few friends that custom tune their SS's and I reckon a custom tuned XR6T will give them a go. :)

Sadly no, not with Unichip.

Now that mine has been sorted the chip actually comes off on Friday as I can see no real benefit in persisting.

Having witnessed an XR6T being tuned in less than an hour with Edit, springs injectors but standard exhaust to over 300RWKW other than the looks and sound I started to wonder about the wisdom of investing heavily in the exhaust.

Interesting stuff this Edit!

So Dingah, you gonna tell us how you went with sorting your car out?! Maybe you could do the same as you did before and post in both this and the CAPA section so followers of your exploits can keep track. Or maybe just start up a whole new thread in the CAPA section.

I know there's a lot of people, myself included, who'd be very interested to hear about your results mate. :stirthepot:

Hmm the question I have been dreading as it is inevitable but I really do not want this to dissolve into any more stupidity, finger pointing, accusation or whatever.

This is a technical answer to try and help those with a genuine interest.

Yes the car is fixed.

What had to be fixed – well I didn’t know. There was a wealth of gratuitous advice I received, ranging from bad fuel to bad luck.

At the heart of the issue was that the car was audibly detonating in all three tunes, under accelerative loads, engine warm, engine cold across a range of ambient temperatures from 5 to 28 degrees Celsius. Due to detonation the power achievable during the tunes was limited to about 35RWKW less than its original state with APS Phase II – why – again I did not know and all the obvious things were checked and appeared ok.

Nick and I conversed on a number of occasions, mindful that he was very engaged undertaking tuning in the West at the time and in fairness to his customers there I preferred to wait until the following week to look for a way ahead.

During the intervening time I was approached by the Edit heavies and asked if I would undertake an independent assessment of the car and re-tune at Nizpro.

Upon discovering Nizpro were based in Melbourne I can hardly say my heart leapt for joy.

By sheer darn luck/good fortune I was able to combine work and this event and headed south, having advised Nick of this, last Sunday afternoon.

I had asked both Simon at Nizpro and Nick if we could get everyone on site at the same time during this event in order to try and remove the potential political outfalls from this.

I arrived on-site on Monday morning and was warmly greeted by the folk there.

The car was immediately taken inside, strapped down, ECG monitors connected, laptops readied and work began.

There were no anomalies discovered with the car that could have contributed to the detonation issue – the fuel system was delivering copious amounts of fuel, filter was fine, all hoses etc in good order.

As is the way with Edit, and the non-believers please take note, one tuner cannot view another’s work via software alone thus a new set of maps were immediately loaded and adjusted.

Work began on a No2 Map for 95RON. This was achieved fairly quickly with a resulting 265RWKW on about 12 psi boost – it was at this point I had promised Nick I would call him and get him to come down. Unfortunately for Nick, and I have already personally spoken with him and apologised; I did not. There was never any intent in this just complete absent mindness. At the time Simon’s dad Marty had appeared in the workshop and upon hearing I was a pilot in the ADF he dragged me away for about three hours to view and discuss an aircraft that he is designing and building.

When I returned Simon was fiddling with the 98RON tune and laid out a series of options with the car now and in the future in respect of its injectors. Having gone to the trouble to travel all the way down to Nizpro I took the punt and the injectors were changed out for even larger ones (the Nizpro injectors). Whilst the APS Phase II injectors were quite capable of supplying the fuel required for the tune in question, my future plans could be impacted by their characteristics and I have to admit after hearing so much detonation in the past, anything that could give more fuel was an attractive option.

The injectors were changed out and re-scaled in a matter of moments, and the 98RON and a low power economy map were completed and set up without any further debates.

Prior to driving I had asked if the auto transmission characteristics could be shaped a little differently noting that I had a modified valve body in my transmission. This was also undertaken, loaded and then I took the car out for a road test.

Bloody lovely were my words. Bit of hunting at idle which should be overcome with some learning time for the PCM. By then some forecast rain had appeared which also gave me the opportunity to test the traction control in suitable conditions and I was delighted to see it flash, function and re-set as designed. Also I noted that the electric engine cooling fan now cycled off more regularly than before.

The power delivery is less aggressive than the previous tune, which, being an older fart, is to my liking. Very similar to the APS Phase II but with more urge low down and more wind in the sails at the top end. As this is the first time that my car has seen those sort of boost and power levels Simon pointed out the first clear evidence of a couple of valve springs starting to misbehave at around 5300RPM which gave a fairly steep drop off in power till they recovered (about 70RWKW). Insufficient time was available in which to even consider replacing these as well as having bought up both Simon and Dave’s time for nearly all of the day, other work was obviously starting to back up.

So where are we now?

The car is behaving beautifully, on three maps, 98, 95 and a low boost 95 with added economy measures capable of taking standard ULP if necessary.

The powers see 290 and 265 available in the 98 and 95 maps and the converted actual torque figure is 830nm at around 2500RPM – all very nice. No detonating, transmission sweet, just waiting for the idling to settle down in les than three or four oscillations.

The trip back on the highway at legal speeds saw the display telling me 10 litres/100km but a careful check of distance travelled versus fuel used gave me a figure of 9.5litres/100km which is sensational on the ‘big’ map.

What lies ahead? With the headroom now available from the bigger injectors, most likely the springs and a bigger I/c and that’s enough.

Had a good look at Brian’s 1000 HP beast (a great testing ground for driveline components!) whilst there plus a few other visiting Ts as they passed through the workshop.

One fellow deposited his T fitted with bigger injectors, I/c and Edit which was producing about 245RWKW (standard exhaust). The valve springs were changed (in bloody good time), the tune re-set on the dyno and one very happy T owner then drove away far more quickly than he arrived thanks to a total of 306RWKW!.....all achieved in a very short space of time.

The end result is I have a VERY driveable car, its longevity is not in question, my misgivings about the philosophy and outcomes being achieved by Edit software have been blown away and the Unichip will be removed tomorrow.

My thanks go to al those involved for being such bloody marvellous, good humoured and professional blokes – not the least of them being Nick who rang me the next day to inquire if I had forgotten something!

I have tried to keep the focus of this on technical issues and not days of our lives, rather unsuccessfully for which I apologise – you did ask Buggy!

The main reason for the lightweight technical side is that there were really no great technical issues to be addressed, thank goodness. The Edit works and yes I am now a believer and user. Nevertheless, the Unichip the way I had it set up worked bloody well too which is a point not lost on either Simon or Dave during the day there. However now I can change tunes, flash back to factory, and have the transmission characteristics tailored to meet my preferences – were those features available from Unichip I may never have gone down this path.

Technical queries most welcome, personal issues not.

glad to hear your car is sorted... so when you say 1 tuner cant see what another tuner does... does this mean they cant see things liket he amount of timing the other tuner has put in?? or did I understand this incorrectly??

Spot on Jetute. The tunes in your box are just that - your tunes and cannot be accessed by another tuner other than the one that burnt them into your flasher box. You could of course put the car on the dyno and using scan tools etc determine some of the parameters but you cannot access the Edit tables, which is right and proper - copyright so to speak.

Sounds good.

So you went with bigger injectors then??

Will you ever need to go back to DTS now?

I really like the sound of different flashes but as I have a manual the auto fix is lost on my car.

Will ALWAYS use DTS whenever I can and it's my long held hope that they will get Glen onto Edit one day; it's frustrating not being able to access the level of support the Melbourne and Sydney guys enjoy here in Canberra.
