Typhoon Member 564 Member For: 20y 6m Gender: Male Posted 27/10/05 09:31 AM Share Posted 27/10/05 09:31 AM Ok it really could be alot of things. for example it could be a simple thing like XP Pro Firewall conflicting with your 2nd PC.Could be auto update config on your software like windows update or an anti virus update searching on line. In all honestly it would be a very hard thing to try and fix in this manner. You really need someone that knows what there doing to sit in front of your network and have a play.Im pretty sure you will find that it is some sort of defult setting with a peice of software your running, if you say it was working fine before you reinstalled XP Pro then its probably a setting with XP Pro . Try turning of the firewall as a test and also disconect from the internet to isolate the problem. (you know make sure its not trying to find an internet site that dose not exist.Sorry mate other than that small bit of info there will really be not alot more I will be able to suggest with out being there or spending 10hrs online typing to each other..Good luck

mickq Member 740 Member For: 21y 11m 2d Posted 27/10/05 12:46 PM Share Posted 27/10/05 12:46 PM I have a basic network at home, one pc connected to adsl usb modem other pc has a lan cable for shared internet. The problem is the pc that conects to the phone point/internet needed xp pro to be reinstalled as it became corrupt and ever since I got the internet working again on the other computer I get constant traffic across the lan, like 4000 packets in 20 minutes sent, anyone with some network knowledge help?<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Assuming you arent doing anything unusual with your low level settings - which judging by your post you are not likely to be, 4000 packets at a likely MTU of 1500 = 5.85MB.that's not a whole lot of data over a 10/100Mbps LAN, although it does indicate something is going on as its a lot more than normal if you arent sending files. What you should do is work out over that same time what amount of info is going out over the modem. You can use a program like DU Meter to measure the traffic on a particular interface - but Im not sure if it works for USB although probably does....if USB uses a MAC address. (Havent used a USB modem so havent checked - but bluetooth does so USB probably does for network capable devices). You can then run DU Meter and see if that traffic is going out on the Internet, or just between PC's. If its going out on the Internet as well, Id consider running an Antispyware program on both PC's to check all is OK. Also worth trying on each PC: shut down all internet using apps such as Messenger etc. On each PC pressing Start-->Run and type incmdWhen the black box appears, type in netstat -aIt will then show you all network connections on that machine - look for anything unusual! There should not be anything like user1.blahblah.com or similar there if you have shut down all progs on your PC that use the internet. If there is, it may be an indicator that something on your PC is maintaining a connection to the internet.

With everything closed down, should be maybe 20 lines on a clean machine. You have quite a few web (http) sessions up there, but you only have the forum showing. What else is running? Right click on the bottom task bar and choose task manager. Check the application and processes tabs and look for anything unusual. Sort by CPU and look for anything at the top of the list using up CPU cycles.
mickq Member 740 Member For: 21y 11m 2d Posted 29/10/05 11:38 AM Share Posted 29/10/05 11:38 AM hmm means to me??<{POST_SNAPBACK}>hey a question, who is your Internet Service Provider (ISP)?is it a company called hotline.net.au or similar? And do you have something like a download limit alerter or something installed from them? That entry is the only one I dont recognise. The 66.249.89.104 entry is OK...that's google. The blackbox.mshome.net bit is ok too, as that's something Windows makes up when you use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on your PCs.The large number of UDP listening ports is a little unusual, but none of them look suss and nothing is actually connected to them (at the time you did netstat). It also seems you have netbios turned on. if you dont need it, turn it off. You wouldnt believe what you can get access to using that if you know what you are doing - you can even browse other people's hard disks!Just as a safety measure, try this (if it kills your net connection on the other PC, then un do it)1) Go to Control Panel2) Double click on Network Connections.3) Right Click on Local area Connection and choose Propeties4) A bunch of tick boxes will appear. For normal use you should ONLY have ticked the following:- Client for Microsoft Networks- Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).- You may also have one such as Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Tick that as well if its there.UNTICK File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft NetworksUNTICK QOS Packet Scheduler (dont need it). Also, what sort of internet connection do you have? Dial up modem, ADSL, Cable internet?
