I have a basic network at home, one pc connected to adsl usb modem other pc has a lan cable for shared internet. The problem is the pc that conects to the phone point/internet needed xp pro to be reinstalled as it became corrupt and ever since I got the internet working again on the other computer I get constant traffic across the lan, like 4000 packets in 20 minutes sent, anyone with some network knowledge help?

I'm no Network expert, but you've confused me a little with your explanation.

I'm assuming that the ADSL line terminates directly into the HUB/Router, and the 2 PC's also connect to the same HUB/Router.

If so, is either PC connecting to the Internet ok ?

If not, are the 2 PC's connecting via the LAN ok ?

More info please.

I had a similar problem when No.1 Son had to reload his OS. While my PC continued to connect to the Internet / LAN, his couldn't.

His PC didn't work with DHCP but whn I assigned an IP address, all was ok.

Once I was able to connect his PC to the Internet, I downloaded the latest drivers for his inbuilt LAN chip....and then DHCP worked beautifully.

Could be similar problem ?????

That's why I asked for more info.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I’m doing a diploma in network engineering at the moment I might be able to help.

Firstly WOW it could be so many things, ok um what O/S are you running on both PCs? I need more info on you LAN cable is it a cross over cable or a straight through cable (twisted pair). Is the LAN cable plugged into a switch or is it a duel port modem.

Look now that I read your post again I simply need more info tell me all that you can about your network. Cabling, Modem, Switches, O/S, software installed on both PCs including anti virus and additional fire wall protection is XP Pro on both machines.

ok, 2 pc's, one at the phone point has an adsl modem into the usb port, runs xp pro, both computers have nic cards and I have a crossover cable between them, pc 2 is xp home. beyond that I run the network set up wizard on both till it works, and it took quite a few attempts this time?

is there still network traffic when you unplug the internet connection from pc one? it could be that your 2nd pc has a program accessing the internet, could be a legitimate program updating, or it could be some form of spyware

Could be doing any of the following from the Internet :

Installing Service Pack updates for OS

Installing Virus Software updates

Let's hope it's not installing a Virus :censored:

With the connection to ADSL removed....does the activity continue ?
