Bov Modification

It was suggested to me last night that instead of spending big dollars replacing the BOV, you can just disconnect the return hose (air outlet from bov back to the air intake) and plug it. I was told that this would make the bov able to be heard in the cabin without sounding too loud as it's now venting to atmosphere.

Has anyone done this, and can anyone see this causing problems?

The XR6T doesn't run a MAF so the ECU isn't going to miss the extra air blown back into the intake.

It was also suggested by someone else that when you back off the intake manifold is reduced to a vacuum drawing the piston backwards in the bov allowing air to blow off and/or at idle it draws air in. So at Idle its drawing in some unfiltered air due to it being open to atmosphere.

Is this true and what are peoples thoughts on the matter?

I'd like to also hear from tuners in regards to their thoughts as well.

ENVY-T vented his blow off valve and I can vouch its notiable in the cabin and it sounds quite good. Unfortuntely though if the cops picked up on the this it is illegal I believe, but I doubt it would warrant them taking much action.

I had mine disconnected for ages and it made no noticable difference in performance(good or bad), and it sounded pretty cool.

Not sure about the unfiltered air getting in though...

It's illegal alright LOL. You could always use the excuse that the hose fell off however I think it would be a good idea to plug the hose that you remove. So they would only have to look at it to realise what you have done.

I'm keen on trying it but I would like to get some idea on whether it can cause any damage as I don't know whether guy that said the bov vent can suck air back in is right or wrong. I don't see how this could be the case as the same thing would be happening to any after market bov with a trumpet.

Bain, it's the large return hose off the bov that goes back to the intake pipe. Just don't block off the pipe that goes from near the TB to the bov.

Ahh I know the one.

Ill try it out tomorrow and see how it goes.

Ive wanted to have a louder bov, but not crazy loud like you hear on most cars. If this is a simple way of doing it then great!

I just got off the phone to Marcus (Envy) he was really helpful and I appreciate him spending the time to explain it to me. I even got to listen to his over the phone and I'm impressed, it sounds great.

Here are a couple of shots that I took for Jamie.

I used 1'' rubber chair tips from bunnings at an almighty cost of $2.20 for a pkt of 4!

The one to the back of the crossover pipe is like a plug and I removed the hose and drilled a 10 mm hole in the another tip make it sound better.

Then I leaned bov onto the hose that runs from the pcv valve to stop it from butting up against the other chair tip, this muffles the sound alot when they are touching.

So the bit on the back of the crossover is completely blocked, and the air is vented through that 10mm hole on the bov???

I think im just confusing myself.
