I have had some very loud 'cracks' come from the car from time to time. I always put this down to something moving to relieve unequal thermal expansion/contraction somewhere...

can you give a little more info on how long you had been driving/weather conditions/heater on etc...

Cheers,

Ben.

I have had exactly the same thing twice - scared the :pooh: out of me but had no further symptoms. Mentioned it to ford last service and they did an ecu edit and I haven't had it since. When it happened to me I was accelerating both times - I thought it might be over boost ??

I had only been driving for about 10 mins. weather was fine and no air con. it absolutely scared the sh*t out of me. it was literally like something had hit the car from the side towards the back. I was just driving under a bridge and I thought that someone had dropped a brick on the boot from the bridge

the car did not behave any different but it was just the noise

I've had the same sound every now and then. For me, it's a backfire. They can get loud sometimes (my brother actually heard it once, while following me on an enthusiastic drive) and when you're concentrating on the road it sounds like something else and louder then it actually is. It happens quite rarely and I can't replicate it, which would be good. Bit like in the movie Uncle Buck, but minus the smoke.

Backfire + bridge accustics = VERY LOUD.

Definately sounds like a meaty backfire to me... If everything drives as per usual, this is goto be candidate number 1.

Oh and symptoms for a broken CV are, lack of drive, one of the axils flapping about under the car.................
