Hey guys

My 4speed auto T makes a terrible whining noise in 1st gear - is this normal, can I have it adjusted out or should box be replaced under waranty??

This is the same with almost every single car on the road.

Its simply the bearing on one of the planetaries in 1st gear. It has to spin faster than any other cog in the box, so naturally it requires a heavier, tighter packed bearing which whines its head off... that's my understanding anyway, or something similar.

A small gear spinning really damn fast.

I'm pretty sure it didn't do it when I picked up the car last November - I'll get Ford to take a look. But if they don't fix it I'll take it to a good 'box joint and see what they say

I drive around Melb a lot I am constantly in stop/start traffic and the whine is really anoying.

Thanks guys

If this is normal mine must be f*cked, as it doesn't make a noise!!!

I said almost every...

Some things actually do get produced to the exact manufacturers specifications, in every way... Its just rare....

I've successfully had a new gear set put into my auto under warranty, when I got it back the 1st gear whine is there, but much quieter, second gear whine vanished and it now changes much smoother, snappier.

One thing you have to keep in mind is the mechanics at your dealers, some have the skills to rebuild your auto, most are "of the shelf" engine part fitters.

:wink1:

Tell them that you want to initiate the warranty process, they will then get some warranty rep from ION to make a decision on it.

Thanks Griffon

I will do that at next service.

I am a litlte worried about the mechanics at the dealers - but I suppose it is there problem if it is warranty and hopefully it will be beter in the end.

btw - isn't ION the compnay that went broke recently? Or have I got that confused?
