The thing is if you get another one there's a 90% chance that one will clunk just as much if not more. I wouldn't worry too greatly about it, I haven't heard of many actually letting go so they must be strong enough. I do agree that the noise is not acceptable but if you can deal with it just drive it normally. If it starts whirring, then you need to worry!! The whining will get louder over a few kms so either get yourself home or to the dealer as a whining from the diff means it's about to let go!

I had a diff clunk appear in my first diff at about 4500km, didnt think anything of it as it sounded like the clunk that everybody talks about, slowly it got more annoying and at about 5-6000km it let go completely in a rather strange way (pulling up to a speed hump, that I scrape with 4 people in the car, went into first, cluch out only to have no motion and knawing gears in the rear end)

My dealler fixed it and over the next 1000km I was still taking it easy running in the new diff (no burnouts hard launches ect) only to have a very similar sound come on again, drove it a little longer till it became more pronounced (as it only started making the sound very occasionally) took it down to ford and took the supervisor for a drive 3 days latter a new diff was back in my car. Diff 3 has done 1200km and I have had one clunk when I was reversing.

hafadude my recomendation is to take it to ford and just get them to check it.. aslong as they put something in the system about it then *if* something does go wrong down the road then atleast they are more likely to accept that there is an issue.

Seriously though, I can drive around the diff clunk but I cant do anything about the noisy gearbox which I will be complaining about regularly..

I read in a post by Hypnodoc, that some additive fixed the noisy gearbox in his case. Was a product called Redline.

EDIT: yep, it was called Redline gear oil, as found here:

http://www.modyourcar.com.au/?cPath=14_202

The MT90 product is a specific manual trans lubricant.

Apparently silences the noise. I reckon Nulon gear oil might do the same, though this stuff had the Hypnodoc seal of approval.

Could be worth a try.

And..... I'm spent.

Yep, already looked into that its not actually the mt90, its the lightweight shockproof one that hypnodoc used and I have spoken to the redline rep here in WA about putting some in and fingers crossed it works. But still that aint the point, it shouldnt be noisy at all.

It's been a while but I finally got the T to my local dealer to check out the clunking noise. I told them the clunk only appeared after a long run so they said it would be hard to find the problem if it did not make a noise after driving around the block. I thought I would get the standard reply when I picked up the car that they couldn't find anything.

Anyway, surpriz, surpriz, that arvo the dealer advised that the diff has a large rubber damper and it was cracked. They will order a new one and will arrive in about a week. I'll do another post after they put the new damper in and I'll see if there's any improvement.

Could this be the same problem with other T diff clunkers?

Been there, done that! Had the same problem with mine. It is "apparently" selecting first early thinking you want to make a quick getaway? I had mine back to the dealer about 4 times and got no result! So if you find a dealer who fixes the problem let us all know ay! He will be a busy man!

Took mine to dominelli after hearing the clunk they drove it around the block then ordered me a new diff. They rang me a couple of weeks later when it was in and installed it for me. The new one has been ok so far for about 2000klms. Very happy with their service.

if that's the rubber thing I am talking about, its visible from the back of the diff with the car raised. Its used to attach the diff to some other major suspension/cross bar component.

I have the pleasure of being the first person to break one :)

On my Mk1 I was having some squeaking from the back. Drove me nuts. Showed them and they agreed it would drive them nuts too.

After ages they worked out what it was...that rubber thing.

Replaced it and the squeaking vanished.

They also said it was the first instance of this occurring anywhere, and Ford didnt know why it had broken. (Perhaps getting the car 100% airborne twice might have done it....hell of a landing especially the 140kmh one....)

its a big job though - they have to rip the whole rear end out of the car to change it....all wheels, axles etc etc
