A Good Time To Buy

Reason for the post is two fold:

Firstly, but hi to everyone on the forum. Been lurking for as while and am just about to buy, so thought I'd post a "hi". Also, pass on info on current deals.

Ford dealers are currently having a "runout sale" on the XR range, but I was told orders better be in quick, as they will be pulling down the line for the new series v/soon. So, orders in this week - apparently.

Now for the deal. The base xr6t is $46,350 and the runout deal is -- $38,990. That's over seven grand discount. Of course you could always shop to get better than $46k, but this was without asking. The dealer also told me "there's room to move" on that price. So, I'll be hitting the phone today and trolling around the dealers to get a better price.

I'm thinking at the moment, Auto, 18", premium sound, side air bags. I could go the luxury pack, but not too sure how the leather would be in the summer. Any thoughts? I've been told if you want a sweaty back, they're the go.

I could also wait for the new 6-speed auto, but it will be a LOOOOnng time 'til discounting starts. My thoughts also are there's enough torque for the 4-speed to be more than adequate.

Went down to my local dealer yesterday and took a xr6t out for a spin with the wife, and the sales dude taking the back seat. Hopped onto my local freeway for a few HP tests. Tried out the semi-auto and forgot to move back to drive. Ha. Took an exit ramp to go back and sat at the light waiting to turn back onto the freeway. Turned off traction control and took off when the lights changed. Moderators please do not get too concerned. I only acellerated to the 110 kph speed limit. As I approached the speed limit (quite quickly I must admit) the car decided that as I was in "manual mode" it would stay in first gear. Took me a few seconds to realise why the engine was revlimitting then dropped it into drive. Cost of petrol used for acceleration test - 42 cents; cost of test vehicle - $38,990; Expression on face of salesman as he waited for a conrod exit procedure at 6000 rpm - priceless.

BTW, this was a nov 2004 demo car that the dealer was trying to sell. Errrrrrmmm, don't think I'll by an ex demo. It's been thrashed!!

Couple more questions just came to mind:

Engine run-in times? Do you still have to run in engines?

I had a landrover discovery turbo-deisel and I always waited for a minute or two before turning off the engine to let the turbo spin down. Do you have to do that on the t, or do you just kill the engine?

Sorry for the long post. I'll keep them short from now.

Cheers everyone....

Should be able to find plenty of posts on your questions in the site, especially on running in a new engine. I would go the leather seats despite a sweaty back, the airconditioners in these cars are pretty good!

Welcome aboard hank ... you've got plenty of reading to do - if you do a search there's plenty of debate on running-in procedures and cool-down times etc.

It is certainly a good time to buy and you won't be dissappointed I reckon. Personally I don't like the leather but the luxo pack is a very good option. If you're planning any mods I'd go for the manual - the four speed auto is about at it's torque handling limit. But, the modded autos are quicker to 400m it seems (if that's only how far you're gonna drive).

Looks like only a matter of days till the resale hits below 30 grand.

Good one Ford.

Ken

It's Fords fault?! Nope, all they did was make an awesome car.

Try the fact that it's a bloody popular car, and there are a lot about. If you want great resale, buy something more exclusive, more expensive and less fun!

Agreed on an awesome car.

If its so popular you would think there would be a huge amount of people looking to buy 2nd hand and in that respect should keep resale prices a bit higher than they are.

Id say that WRX are popular too and they have a better resale than the T.

Wonder why they feel the need to offer such large discounts on cars not even built yet? Its not like they are getting rid of existing stock.

Talk about shafting owners and resale :spoton:

We're all out of love for large cars

The Sydney Morning Herald

Friday September 2 2005

Ford's large car had one of its worst ever monthly sales performances in July, selling just 3784 Falcons. It was overtaken by the Toyota Corolla. The last time the Falcon was in this much trouble was in the depths of the AU disaster: in September 2002 Ford sold just 3679 Falcons.
