Do You Smoke?

I don’t smoke, tried once when I was about 13 didn’t like it.

I work in the medical industry, almost everyday I come across someone who has a chronic disease or condition that will kill them or drastically reduces their quality of life.

Some of them even make me promise them never to take up smoking.

I remember the first time this happened I was trying to fix an intermittent problem on an Ultrasound machine used for Vascular work. They sent me into the room when the patient was still on the table. It was a guy in his 50’s I said hi and looked down at his ankles and saw a huge gaping wound and said “holy crap” out loud to which he said you haven’t seen the half of it.

He lifted back his sheet to show me a freshly stitched wound running from his foot all the way to his underdaks.

He had just had surgery to try improving the blood flow to his feet. This was apparently as a direct result of 35 years of smoking. He told me never to touch smokes.

He seemed to know what he was talking about…..

Here is a billboard with regularly changing pro smoker logos on one of the county towns I pass thru from time to time. My favorite is…

100% of non smokers die!

But of course the same is true for smokers.

The reality is if you smoke, IT WILL KILL YOU unless something else kills you first.

Also if you think the pittance you pay in private health insurance comes remotely close to the cost of keeping you alive in latter life should a smoking related illness arise you are delusional.

no one disagrees with what you say... We all know smoking will kill you... and we all know we will all die whether we smoke or not.

So according to you, someone smoking down the way will spread noxious gasses amongst us all, however, sitting in an alfresco cafe next to the road you will be unadorned of all pollutants? Never think perhaps, they're both bad, but you just take one as a given and the other you are one-eyed bigot against???

On a serious note, I don`t smoke and they offered to do that same operation to my old man when he was in his seventies. They opened up his legs but said the arteries were too far rotted to do anything,then they asked us to amputate and we told them just sew him back up if he dies he dies with all his limbs.About 5 years later he fell off a chair fractured his hip in hospital for a week and died of pheumoia.

At the end of the day everybody has a choice in life and it`s up to them to make it.

I think you mean well alot of the times Lawsy but sometimes you need to stand back and read your own threads as if they were someone elses ,you can be a bit pushy in your beliefs.

smoking least of my worries...

Like my father said give up smoking drinking and all other advised toxics ... then get run over by a bus..... when your number is up you get the call!
