Ok Rossco I have done some Mythbusting for you.

Heading downhill along Erindale/Yamba drive at about cough ninety cough in 5th yields an instant L/100 rate of 0.5 pop it into angel gear and it slowly rises to about 1.6 at the same speed. Perversely this increases to about 2.5 in 6th. Perhaps another indication that all is not as it should be, in 6th.

And just out of curiosity heading in the opposite direction uphill flatout in 2nd returns a reading of about 86.9L/100ks.
