Ford might not have a better auto for too long, when the updated BA arrives later this year.

GM has just released details of their new 6L80 6 speed auto which is going in the 2006 corvette. It will be interesting to see whether the VE Late model camira next year will get this version, it may be too early and costly.

take a guess and say that it will be in the HSV's straight of the bat... V8 FRD is probably right with the mainline models getting it in 08

I agree with the above...

the 6speed will first make a debeut in the HSV's...

so earliest would be the VE HSV's and whatever model comes after the VE should have it in the standard commodore

I read in Wheels mag May 2005 pg 19 that Ford may be considering a new ZF Friedrichshafen 6-speed auto transmission for XR6T (and other high end Ford Falcons and Territorys) by end of this 2005 year. I'd like to know if anyone knows the truth about this and if so, when it will happen?

Wheels reckons it makes sense for Ford to update the transmission at the same time as making changes to the in-line 6 cylinder engine to meet Euro III emission standards (currently they're meeting the Euro II emission standards). The new Euro III emission standard comes into force on New Years Day 2006 in Australia.

I'm hoping so because I"m expecting delivery of my brand new Silhouette XR6T in November this year

I read that the MkIII is due in late Sept or sometime in October. I'm hoping that's when deliveries start. They reckon the MkIII will have the new ZF 6 speed auto transmission for the XR6T and other high end BAs and Territorys.

Here's the link if you're interested to check out the postings.

With all this grunt why so many ratios?5 speeds for a manual and 4 speeds for an auto sound like plenty to me.Not lacking torque in the modern engine design are we?Just a more complicated transmission that can be go wrong in more ways.A quest for fuel economy maybe?

You would think the 6 speed ZF would be complicated but it uses very few moving parts compared to other autos, and with ZF's legendary ability to build quality autos realiability should be impressive. Fuel economy should be hugely improved too.

As for the GM 6 speed the rumour is that only the V8's will get it, probably only HSV's and maybe the SS, Caprice etc.

Just read the latest wheels magazine and they are predicting the New VE commodore, will get this 6L80 transmission, with the option of the LS2 V8 ticked.

I think it's a good thing for us motor enthusuiasts, as I loathe 4 speed auto's but LOVE the close ratio 6 speeds.

:P;)
