Although I also agree in part with the bigger rims debate. My main concerns were the el cheapo rims not being up to standard and possible damage caused by too low profile tyres, thus my decision to stick to 18" rims, go with a reputable (good old Aussie!) brand, and dress them with decent (Goodyear F1) 235 tyres. :blush:

For the same money I reckon I could have had monster 19" or even 20" wheels!! :pooh::gooff:

As Turbo6man said, anything can aquaplane if the conditions are right, the width of the tyre makes it more prone to this condition than a narrower tyre.

In relation to the negatives, I could make a long list that would far exceed any possitives, some minor some not so.

People tend to forget the physics of changing the width of the wheel. If you put a wider rim, you will change the rolling centre of the wheel in relation to the axel. This can lead to premature bearing failure and in some cases broken or bent axels.

Now some may say that they have gone to 9.5" rims and never had an issue, but it is a fact that things like this can cause problems.

With the braking efficiency, it would be reduced, just because you have more rubber on the road will not make the car stop faster. It is the opposite, if you have your Huandi Excel with 19" rims (common, but extream example) you will significantly increase the stopping distance. The reasons for this are that the rolling energy of a 19" wheel is significantly higher than a 14" (stock) wheel, add to that the more traction caused by the rubber, the car would not have the power to lockup the wheels, let alone take advantage of the extra traction. If you had brembo's on this Excel, you would not have this issue, but have other problems, such as component strength of the suspension to cope with the extra braking and traction.

Now if you transpose ther above example onto a XR6T and stick 22" wheels as the example, you will have a similar problem.

Now remember I am not saying that every increased wheel/tyre combo will have detrimental results, but they will all have some effect on the vehicle.

This is why the insurance company will generally not insure a car with wheels larger than 1" above standard and why it is illegal unless a car has been signed off by an engineer to rubber stamp the mods.

Its just like putting a bigger exhaust on your stock car, it might sound better, but the ECU will put the car into limp mode because the car will make more boost. There are actions and results in EVERY mod you do, you just need to know what they are.

I am sh*tting a bit now after reading some comments. I just bought (awaiting delivery) the 19" package with 275 rears, 245 fronts (Fuision Zanetti).

I know they are getting common, but they look awesome IMO.

Now the part that's scary, is that I thought I would be SAFER not less safe running huge tyres and rims. :blink:

I did not mean to scare you about the upgrade, but wanted you to know that it is not a safety upgrade, but more a performance / Look upgrade.

I do not think you have over done the wheel package as the size is only 1inch higher and stock width fron with slightly wider at the rears.

If you went 22" then it would be different.

Enjoy your new rims, they will look tops :spoton:

Has anyone had particularly good/bad experiences with any series of tyre?

For Example, most say the nankang's are rubbish. However, I ask how bad can a 19" 275/35 be???? If they are making rubbish in that size then I'd be surprised. :blink:

Is it more of a case of the norm, that is the bigger brands will always have a good rep OR are they really a dodgy tyre Co? Any comments from experience?

I know Macka was pretty happy with em.

There is nothing wrong with the Nankangs, they are made in the same factory that makes Yokohama's, so they cant be too bad.

May be if you are on the track you would notice a difference, but I have read several reports that they are a good road tyre. They are also 1/2 the price of the other choices.
