Hi I had a similar problem on a EL XR8, disconnect the AFM and start the car see what it runs like I did that on mine and it worked fine

That will give an indication but it will also log an AFM code in the computer so if you get ford to check the codes after they will say its the AFM.

Put the AFM in the freezer for an hour or so..

don't laugh, just try it..

Also, check the pcv valve. could be blocked.. simple fix..

If it's AFM, and cost is an issue, it might pay for you to get the part number and start looking up some yankee sites as they are the same setup as on the early 90's Mustang 5.0. You might save a buck. As Jeff said, it's best to goto Ford and get it diagnosed, they'll tell you what part it is straight away. I've been down the track of changing 'suspect' parts, it's a costly exercise. As mentioned, it could also be the fuel pump or it could be faulty throttle position sensor, egr valve or maybe just an airleak in the crakcase. Good luck with it.

However, since he got back, the thing has been playing silly beggars on a few occasions, culminating today, with the Sprint actually stalling/cutting out on him WHILE driving.

Strange things lately include:

*Engine hunting at idle for a few seconds, generally at startup, between about 400 and 800 revs. (This happened before the chip)

You sure George didn't put a BA pcm in it :pooh::kissmy:

LP,

Another thought is that it could be a fuel filter. With all the driving he may have got a bad tank of fuel and its clogged up the filter.

I would take it to Ford and get them to tell you what codes are being thrown up. You should reset the ECU bvy unplugging the battery for a few minutes and then have a drive arund to get it to fault. Take it to the dealer and this should tell you where the problem is. If you go in there with the ECU not reset, you may have 4 years of codes to go through.

I still think its the AFM
